Preparing for Winter: A Home Checklist for Older Residents in Sussex
A practical autumn checklist to prepare your home for winter, aimed at older residents and families in Chichester, Bognor Regis and the surrounding villages.

When should I prepare for the Winter?
Autumn is the moment to prepare. The Sussex coast tends to stay milder than much of the country, but the shorter days, colder mornings and unpredictable weather still bring real risk for older people. A few thoughtful changes made in October can prevent a fall in November, a hospital admission in January, or the low mood that a cold, dark home can bring on. This is a checklist for families in Chichester, Bognor Regis and the villages we serve.
Heating and home temperature
Book the boiler service now if one is due. Engineers are much easier to get hold of in October than in December. Aim for a home temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius in rooms that are used regularly. Check the timer settings: many older people forget to adjust for the clocks changing. If cold rooms are an issue, closing the doors of unused rooms and using thick curtains at night can make a real difference without pushing up bills.
Vaccinations to book this month
If you or your loved one is eligible, book the following through the GP surgery or a local pharmacy now:
Flu vaccine. Free for over-65s and for those with certain health conditions. October is the best time to have it, before flu starts spreading.
COVID-19 autumn booster. Currently offered to older adults and other eligible groups.
Pneumococcal vaccine. A one-off vaccine for over-65s that protects against pneumonia.
RSV vaccine. Newer to the NHS programme; check eligibility with your GP.
The Priority Services Register
The Priority Services Register is a free service run by energy and water companies. Everyone over 65 is eligible. Being on it means the utility companies know you may need extra help, such as priority updates during outages, doorstep checks in bad weather, and bottled water if services are interrupted. Signing up takes ten minutes and gives real peace of mind. Ask your energy supplier, or find the details on the Ofgem website.
With the Cold comes Risk
Falls risk: the outside picture
Autumn leaves on damp paths, morning frost and darker afternoons all raise the risk of a fall on the way to the front door or the car. Practical steps make a difference. Keep the front path swept. Fit an outdoor light on a timer or motion sensor. Consider a handrail if the porch step is a challenge. If a walking stick or frame is used, check the ferrules for wear and replace them if they are worn smooth.
Getting the "just in case" bag ready
The Sussex Resilience Forum "Be Ready" campaign recommends a small emergency bag ready for winter disruption. A torch with fresh batteries, warm layers, long-life food, bottled water, a list of key phone numbers and any regular medications. It rarely gets used, but when it is needed, it is invaluable.
Groceries and medicines
Order repeat prescriptions in good time so nobody runs out over a bank holiday weekend. Keep a small stock of over-the-counter essentials, paracetamol, ibuprofen, cough remedies and rehydration sachets. Ask the pharmacist for advice on what to have in. Consider a standing weekly grocery order so nobody has to go out in poor weather to top up.
Help with heating bills
Nobody should be choosing between food and warmth. Support is available:
The Warm Home Discount Scheme reopens each autumn for eligible households.
The Household Support Fund is distributed through West Sussex County Council.
Citizens Advice Arun and Chichester can help you check what you are entitled to.
Libraries across the district are warm, welcoming and free to use six days a week.
