May Newsletter: The Importance of Dementia Care | Dementia Action Week: 19th – 25th May
Published: 07/05/2025
Dementia is a term used to describe a set of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, communication, and daily functioning. Caused by physical changes in the brain due to disease or injury, it can also bring about shifts in behaviour and personality.
Dementia Action Week: Raising Awareness
As Dementia Action Week (19th – 25th May) approaches, we’re spotlighting the importance of early support. Simple lifestyle choices can reduce risk, like eating brain-friendly foods rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and vitamins (think fish, berries, and greens) and exercising just once or twice a week, which can cut dementia risk by 25%.
At Right at Home Chippenham, we encourage our Clients to stay active through monthly exercise challenges that support cognitive function and overall well-being.
Supporting Carers: You Are Not Alone
Caring for someone with dementia can be deeply rewarding but also incredibly demanding. It’s vital that carers take care of themselves too - resting, eating well, and staying socially connected.
To help, we’re launching Dementia Care Workshops, running every 4th Thursday of the month from 22nd May. These sessions will offer practical advice, CPR awareness, and homecare guidance for unpaid carers and those in need.
Staying Active: April’s Step Challenge
Last month, clients embraced a step-up challenge to boost mobility and balance. Many took part daily, supported by our wonderful CareGivers. For May, we’re introducing Chair Squats with support - ideal for building leg strength and improving independence.
