Quack and Cheer: Celebrating the Knaresborough New Year’s Day Duck Race 🦆🎉

Every New Year’s Day, the picturesque town of Knaresborough comes alive with one of its quirkiest and most beloved community traditions — the Knaresborough Duck Race! Held along the scenic River Nidd, this event draws locals and visitors alike for a festive start to the year that’s fun for all ages.

Organised by the Knaresborough Cricket Club, the race sees hundreds (sometimes thousands) of numbered plastic ducks released from High Bridge into the flowing waters of the Nidd. Spectators line the riverbanks with anticipation, cheering their chosen ducks as they bob and drift downstream towards the finish line. Prizes are up for grabs, and every £1 duck sold helps support local causes, including charity initiatives such as Henshaws — making the day not just fun, but meaningful too.

Right at Home Harrogate were truly humbled to support Knaresborough Cricket Club and Henshaws during this event. Being part of a tradition that brings the community together while helping such a worthy cause was an absolute privilege. It’s moments like these that remind us how powerful community spirit and teamwork can be.

It’s not just about the ducks racing — it’s a celebration of connection and joy. Families gather, friends reconnect, and visitors experience the warm, welcoming atmosphere that Knaresborough is known for. Whether you’re grabbing a hot drink from a nearby café, snapping photos of the spectacle, or cheering on your lucky duck, the event brings an uplifting start to the New Year.

Make sure to wrap up warm, bring your sense of fun, and join in this wonderful local tradition — the perfect way to welcome 2026 with laughter, community cheer, and a sense of togetherness!
