5 Simple Ways to Prevent Falls at Home

Published: 22/09/2025

Falls are one of the most common reasons older adults are admitted to hospital. In fact, one in three people over the age of 65 will have a fall each year. The good news is that many falls can be prevented with a few simple steps.

As part of Falls Prevention Week, we’re sharing practical tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe, steady, and confident at home.

Stay Active

Keeping active is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of falls. Gentle activities such as walking, tai chi, or seated exercises help to strengthen muscles and improve balance. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

Check Vision and Hearing

Regular eye and hearing tests are essential. Poor eyesight or difficulty hearing can make it harder to spot hazards or maintain balance. If you use glasses or hearing aids, make sure they’re up to date and in good condition.

Make the Home Safer

A few small adjustments around the home can greatly reduce risks:

  • Improve lighting, especially in hallways and staircases.

  • Remove clutter or trailing wires.

  • Secure rugs with non-slip mats.

  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach.

These changes not only help prevent falls but also give peace of mind to family members.

Choose Supportive Footwear

Shoes and slippers should fit properly and have good grip. Avoid high heels, open-back slippers, or footwear that feels loose. Supportive footwear helps with stability and makes walking around the house much safer.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Dehydration or poor nutrition can lead to dizziness, weakness, or confusion, all of which increase the risk of falling. Encourage regular drinks throughout the day and a balanced diet to maintain energy and strength.

Falls don’t have to be an inevitable part of ageing. By making a few simple changes, families can help loved ones feel safer and more confident at home.
