Celebrating Lou’s dedication to helping people living with dementia continue doing the things they love and living life on their terms.
We are incredibly proud to announce that Lou Sherriff, one of our fantastic carers at Right at Home Mid Hampshire, has been named a finalist for Specialist Carer of the Year at the National Care Awards.
The national recognition celebrates Lou's dedication to providing specialist, person-centred care and, in particular, the wonderful support she provides to people living with dementia.
Helping people continue doing what they love
For Lou, providing great dementia care isn't about focusing on what someone can no longer do. It's about understanding the person, discovering what matters to them and finding ways to help them continue enjoying life.
That approach has led to some brilliant experiences for the Clients she supports.
From trips to play mini golf and bowling to meeting alpacas and other animals, Lou regularly looks for opportunities that reflect each Client's individual interests and give them something to look forward to.
She has also taken the time to find local groups and activities that Clients can enjoy, helping them remain connected to their communities and continue doing the things that make them happy.
These might look like simple days out, but behind every activity is something much more important: choice, independence, confidence and social connection.

Care built around the individual
Lou's nomination highlighted the way she gets to know the people she supports as individuals.
Rather than assuming what someone would like to do based on their age or diagnosis, she asks questions, listens and finds out what genuinely interests them.
It's an approach that reflects something we strongly believe at Right at Home Mid Hampshire: a person receiving care should still have opportunities to try new things, revisit old interests, make choices and enjoy meaningful experiences.
Living with dementia doesn't change that.
Lou also builds trusted relationships with Clients and their families, bringing warmth, patience and enthusiasm to the support she provides.

Recognition on a national stage
Being shortlisted for Specialist Carer of the Year is a fantastic achievement, and we are delighted to see Lou's work recognised on a national level.
Her nomination was supported by real examples and photographs of the experiences she has helped make possible, some of which we've shared alongside this article.
For our team, they capture what great homecare can look like – not simply providing support at home, but helping someone continue to live a life that feels like their own.
