Summer Care Tips: Staying Safe, Cool and Healthy in the Warm Weather

Published: 11/08/2025

When the sun is shining, summer can be a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, see friends, and make the most of longer days.

But for older adults or those living with health conditions, hot weather can bring some challenges.

At Right at Home Mid Hampshire, we’re here to help you and your loved ones stay safe, comfortable and well during the warmer months.

Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

Hydration is key to feeling your best in summer. Older adults can be more prone to dehydration, especially if they take certain medications or have reduced thirst signals.

  • Keep a drink within reach at all times — water, diluted squash, or herbal tea are great choices.

  • Add slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or berries to make drinks more appealing.

  • Try hydrating snacks such as watermelon, cucumber, or strawberries.

  • Use our new hydration ice lolly recipes for a refreshing, healthy treat.

Keep Cool Indoors and Out

  • Wear loose, light-coloured clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

  • Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day to keep rooms cooler.

  • Avoid going out between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest.

  • If you do go out, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen.

Plan Light, Nutritious Meals

  • Opt for smaller, lighter meals to avoid feeling sluggish in the heat.

  • Include fresh salads, cold meats, and fruit.

  • Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can make you feel warmer and more lethargic.

Look Out for Signs of Heat-Related Illness

If you or a loved one feels dizzy, confused, unusually tired, or stops sweating despite the heat, it could be a sign of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

In these cases:

  • Move to a cool, shaded place.

  • Sip water slowly.

  • Seek medical advice immediately if symptoms don’t improve quickly.

Keep Social and Stay Connected

Summer is a great time to meet friends, attend local events, or simply enjoy the garden with family.

Even short periods of gentle activity and fresh air can boost mood and wellbeing.

Our CareGivers are happy to support clients to get out and about safely, whether it’s a short walk, a trip to a lunch club, or a visit to the park.
