Mr Brown's Story

When we first met Mr Brown, life had become difficult in numerous ways. Maintaining his personal hygiene had felt beyond reach for a long time — by his own account, he hadn't showered in around five years — and the day-to-day care of himself had slipped as his anxiety grew. But what mattered to us from the very start was the person behind those difficulties.

Mr Brown is a sharp, deeply cultured gentleman. He attended Eton, rowed for the school, and won several oars. His home is something close to a museum: history in every corner, a story behind every object, his family's OBE and MBE citations framed on the wall. He can tell you the origin of all of it.

But he had become profoundly isolated. Divorced, living alone with his elderly dog, his children too far away to visit as often as any of them would like. He was in the process of an autism assessment. Anxiety — particularly around continence — had made leaving the house feel impossible, and day-to-day pressures like opening letters or answering emails had become overwhelming. He was referred to us by a social practitioner, with concerns around self-neglect and the anxiety sitting behind it.

What We Put in Place

We kept Mr Brown's care team deliberately small. He sees just two care professionals, Zara and Emily, and that continuity has done the heavy lifting. Rather than a rotating cast of unfamiliar faces, Mr Brown has had the chance to build a genuine bond — and it's that trust, more than any task or technique, that opened the door to everything else.

Support was given at his pace. Companionship and personal care, yes, but always led by his wishes, his comfort, and his sense of dignity. Nothing rushed. Nothing imposed.

The Difference It Made

The milestones speak for themselves. Mr Brown had his first shower in five years. He's since attended a barber, and now shaves regularly — small acts, but ones that reflect a real and visible return of pride.

Then came the garden centre. For over a year, Mr Brown hadn't made a trip like it — he was always held back by worry over his continence and a loss of motivation to try. With Zara alongside him, he went. It's the kind of outing many take for granted, but for Mr Brown it marked a genuine re-entry into the world outside his front door. He now goes to the garden centre and into town, and attends his appointments regularly.

Mr Brown feels more able to cope with the pressures of daily life, and more willing to face the letters and emails that once felt like too much. He looks forward to his visits. In his own words, he has been blown away by the support he receives.

"I have been blown away with the support I receive. Having the Carers visit me has become something that I really look forward to."

""I saw Mr Brown for the first time in a few months and I almost didn't recognise him. Not only was his appearance so significantly different — he was standing taller and prouder, with a genuine smile on his face. I'm so proud of how far he has come. It just shows that continuity of care can make such a big difference.""

CQC Quality Statements Demonstrated

Mr Brown's story reflects several of the CQC quality statements in action.

Our care was caring in the truest sense — a small, consistent team built the trust that made everything else possible, keeping his dignity at the centre throughout.

It was responsive, shaped entirely around his anxieties, his pace, and the goals that mattered to him.

Support proved effective, with outcomes that are clear and lived: personal care restored, confidence rebuilt, and a life re-opened to the community.

And our homecare offering was well-led, drawing on a culture of continuity and person-centred support that created the conditions for real and lasting change.

How Right at Home Salisbury & Andover Can Help

Mr Brown's story is a reminder that the smallest, most consistent acts of care can change the shape of someone's life. His progress didn't come from a single intervention — it came from two familiar faces turning up, week after week, earning trust and giving him the space to move at his own pace.

That's what person-centred care means to us at Right at Home Salisbury & Andover. We look at the whole person, not just their care needs — the history on their walls, the dog at their feet, the confidence waiting to be rebuilt. Whether it's companionship, support with personal care, or simply the encouragement to step back into the world, our goal is always the same: to help the people we support live fuller, prouder, more independent lives, in the place they call home.

If someone you love could benefit from care that starts with the person first, we'd be glad to talk.
