Why Small Gestures Matter in Homecare
A story of kindness, compassion, and lasting relationships

How Compassion Created a Lasting Connection
Choosing a care provider is one of the most important decisions a family can make. Whilst qualifications, training, and experience are all essential, many families are looking for something more difficult to define. They want reassurance that the people supporting their loved one genuinely care.
Recently, we were reminded just how important that feeling can be through the story of M and her family.
A Video That Made a Difference
M first came into contact with Right at Home Salisbury & Andover after seeing one of our social media videos.
The video featured our Director, Dr Courtney Hillman, spending time at a local day centre, laughing, dancing, and engaging with members. It was not a carefully scripted marketing campaign or a polished advertisement. It was simply a genuine moment of connection and joy.
For M, however, the impact was profound.
When she later contacted us, she explained that watching the video had brought her to tears. Having researched care providers in the local area, she had been searching for an organisation that felt different. An organisation that saw people as individuals and genuinely cared about making a positive difference in their lives.
The warmth, kindness, and authenticity she saw in that short video gave her confidence to pick up the phone and make contact.
It was the first indication that the values we speak about every day are visible not only to our Clients, but also to those who may need our support in the future.
More Than an Initial Assessment
Following her enquiry, one of our team members arranged to visit M for an initial care assessment.
As with all our assessments, the visit was designed to be much more than a discussion about care needs. It was an opportunity to get to know M as a person, understand her circumstances, and learn about what was important to her.
Whilst preparing for the assessment, we noticed from M's details that the visit would take place on her birthday. When we arrived for the assessment, we brought a bouquet of flowers with us as a birthday gift.
There was no expectation attached to the gesture. M had not signed a contract, and at that stage there was no certainty that she would ever become a Client. The flowers were simply a way of letting her know that somebody was thinking of her and that her birthday had not gone unnoticed.
M was genuinely touched by the gift. As we spent time talking with her, listening to her story, and understanding her needs, it became clear how much the gesture meant. Shortly afterwards, her daughter contacted our office to thank us personally, explaining that the flowers had brightened her mother's day and meant a great deal to the whole family.
Trust Built Through Kindness
Following the assessment, M decided that she did not require care support at that time.
Several months later, however, her circumstances changed and the family reached a point where support at home was needed.
When discussing who they trusted to provide that care, M's daughter immediately remembered the kindness shown during that first meeting.
She contacted us and explained that the flowers had never been forgotten. More importantly, they had reinforced the feeling that M had experienced when she first watched Courtney's video.
The family felt that Right at Home Salisbury & Andover genuinely cared about people, not because we said so, but because we had demonstrated it.
That trust ultimately led them back to us when the time came to choose a care provider.
M's story is not really about flowers.
Nor is it about social media.
It is about the power of genuine human connection.
A video showing people enjoying themselves at a local day centre gave M hope that compassionate care still exists. A thoughtful gesture on her birthday reinforced that belief. Together, those moments built a relationship founded on trust long before any care package was ever discussed.
At Right at Home Salisbury & Andover, we believe exceptional care is not defined solely by the support we provide. It is defined by how people feel when they interact with us.
Whether someone becomes a Client tomorrow, six months from now, or never at all, we want every person we meet to feel valued, respected, and cared for.
Because sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can have the biggest impact.
