Our Idea

When we think about keeping older people safe at home, we often picture complex care plans, specialist equipment, or regular visits from trained professionals. While all of these play an important role, sometimes the most effective tools are also the simplest.

One of those tools is a thermometer.

At Right at Home Salisbury & Andover, we've seen first hand how something as small as a room thermometer can make a significant difference to the health, comfort, and safety of older adults living at home.

Why Temperature Matters More As We Age

As we get older, our bodies becomes less efficient at regulating temperature. This means older people are more vulnerable to both cold and heat, often without realising it.

They may not feel cold in the same way, or may not recognise when a room has become too warm. This can quietly lead to serious health risks such as:

  • Hypothermia in colder months
  • Dehydration and heat exhaustion in warmer weather
  • Increased risk of falls due to stiffness or fatigue
  • Worsening or existing health conditions

In many cases, these risks develop gradually and go unnoticed until they become more serious.

The Hidden Danger in the Home

Many homes, particularly older properties in areas like Salisbury and Andover, can be difficult to keep at a consistent, safe temperature.

We often find that:

  • Heating is turned off to save money
  • Rooms are warmer or colder than people realise
  • There is no clear way to measure temperature accurately
  • Windows are not opened during hot weather

Without a clear indicator, it becomes guesswork.

How a Termometer Makes a Difference

A simple, easy-to-read thermometer removes that uncertainty.

It gives both the individual and their family a clear, visual guide to whether the home is at a safe temperature. Many modern thermometers even include colour indicators or guidance zones, makeing it easier to understand at a glance.

This allows for small, proactive actions such as:

  • Turning the heating on before a room becoms too cold
  • Opening windows or using fans when it becomes too warm
  • Adjusting clothing or hydration levels
  • Alerting family members or carers if something isn't right

These small actions can prevent much bigger problems.

Supporting Independence Through Small Changes

One of the most important aspects of care is helping people remain independent for as long as possible.

A thermometer supports this by giving individuals more control over their environment without needing constant intervention. It empowers them to make decisions that protect their own wellbeing.

For families, it also provides peace of mind, knowing there is a simple system in place to help keep their loved one safe.

Our Community Initiative

As part of our commitment to supporting the local community, our team has been providing thermometers to older people across Salisbury, Andover, and surrounding villages.

Our care professionals have already reported seeing them produly displayed on fridges and in living rooms, becoming art of everyday routines.

It is a small gesture, but one that opens up important conversations about safety, comfort, and wellbeing at home.
