Meet Hamish

Hamish Macdonald’s first encounter with Right at Home came four years ago when his Dad needed some additional care support.

Hamish first became involved in helping older people in his early 20s. Searching for a way to help people in some way, he was advised to look into volunteering. When asked by the volunteer coordinator what he wanted to do, he said he didn’t know but when presented with a list of volunteering opportunities, he found he lent towards roles that involved helping older people.

Over the next 30 years, Hamish established a career in global medical technology. While the technology he worked with delivered positive clinical outcomes, he felt disconnected from the people he was helping.

Outside of work, Hamish and his Dad were regular visitors at the Sunflower dementia cafe in Farnham. Hamish got to know Alastair Shanks, MD at Right at Home and they would have regular conversations about the possibility of Hamish working for Right at Home.

When COVID hit and the country was put into lockdown, Hamish responded to Right at Home’s call for volunteers to help with shopping for vulnerable, older people. This opportunity to help renewed Hamish’s desire to get more involved in frontline care.

Meanwhile, Right at Home continued to grow, and Alastair acquired a new franchise covering Twickenham and Richmond. This expansion saw the creation of a new role which provided an opportunity for Hamish to join the Right at Home family.

As branch manager, Hamish is getting to know the local community, finding out what services are needed and responding to this need. Hamish has been busy making contact with other businesses that work in the sector and connecting with people and voluntary organisations in and around Sunbury.

Hamish is keen for Right at Home to become well known for its expertise in delivering positive solutions that help people live well with dementia. He is also ambitious to grow Right at Home’s community presence and to be seen as a friend that people turn to when they need a helping hand.

For Hamish, it’s early days in his new role but his story shows how people come into care for many different reasons and that you do not have to be a hands-on carer to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Contact Hamish if you would like to find out more about how you can be involved in Right at Home Twickenham and Richmond’s journey.
