Meet Kelsey

What is your role?  I joined Right at Home Twickenham and Richmond as a caregiver. I’ve recently been promoted and am now a Senior Caregiver.

What does this new role involve? I still do daily care calls which I love. The main difference is that I now manage more of the communication with families, and I also organise field supervision. I’m working alongside my colleague Claire to learn how to do reviews of people’s care and I also help with some of the scheduling.

How long have you worked at Right at Home? I joined in October 2023.

What was your previous role?

When I left school I did an apprenticeship in a care home because of my preference for learning on the job. I gained lots of experience and also achieved my Level II diploma in adult social care. I then progressed into domiciliary care and eventually secured a role with Right at Home.

What motivated you to apply for a job at Right at Home? At the time of applying, I didn’t know too much about Right at Home but now I have been here for over a year, I am happy to say they are a really solid team who will help out colleagues when necessary. There is a lot of teamwork, and you get lots of support.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Each day is a new day. As a caregiver, I would do my job but would not always see what is going on in the background. Now I am a senior caregiver, I get to see the other side which is both challenging and eye-opening!

I also like helping people out of difficult situations. I can see the joy caring brings and I like being able to put a smile on someone’s face and to be able to make a difference to someone’s day.

What has been the highlight to date of your time at Right at Home? There have been quite a few but I think being promoted has got to be up there. I’m still quite young and needed lots of encouragement to go for the senior role. I’m glad I went for it and love being able to learn on the job. Every day there is something new to learn and that’s how it is in care.

What are your ambitions for your future at Right at Home? To be honest, I am not too sure at this stage. I enjoy care and like to think that I will continue to explore and learn and take opportunities as they come up.

If somebody is thinking about going into care, what are the main qualities they need? I would say you need:

  • resilience and the willpower to bounce back
  • confidence – you need to believe you can do it
  • a good heart – you need to see the role it for what it is and not what people say it is.
