From Passion to Purpose: My Journey to Becoming a Registered Manager

Published: 10/02/2025

Like many in health and social care, my journey to becoming a Registered Manager wasn’t something I planned from the outset, but it’s a path I’m profoundly grateful to have taken.

As a child, I was always fascinated by the health and social care sector. I imagined myself in a clinical role within a hospital—perhaps as a nurse or a midwife. However, after leaving education without a clear direction, I unexpectedly found myself entering the care industry.

My journey began as a support worker in a residential home for vulnerable individuals with autism, challenging behaviours, and complex health needs. I vividly recall walking into the care home on my first day and absolutely hating it. I even went home and declared, “I’m never going back there.” But something then clicked. These vulnerable people were depending on me—they needed me to show up, give my best, and help them lead fulfilling lives. That realisation changed everything.

As I gained experience in the support worker role, I quickly began taking on more responsibilities. Over time, I transitioned into an assistant manager position, which provided invaluable insight into the operational aspects of care, team management, and regulatory compliance.

A defining moment in my career was managing through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an exceptionally difficult period, but it confirmed that I had the skills, resilience, and passion to lead effectively.

When the opportunity arose to apply for the Registered Manager role at Right at Home, I knew it was the right move. It offered the chance to make a genuine impact—not just on Clients, but on CareGivers and the wider community.

The transition was not without its challenges. Learning to balance the paperwork alongside the ‘people work’ has been a steep learning curve, yet deeply rewarding.

Today, as a Registered Manager, I have the privilege of shaping high-quality homecare services, supporting an outstanding team, and building meaningful relationships with Clients and their families. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that no two days are the same, and every day is an opportunity to make a positive difference.
