Dan and Nikki Attend March OPALS Event
This month, our Care Coordinator Dan and Deputy Manager Nikki were delighted to attend the latest OPALS (Older Persons Activity, Learning and Safety) event held at Grovehill Community Centre, Hemel Hempstead. The event forms part of Hertfordshire’s ongoing commitment to supporting older residents by providing safety advice, well-being guidance, community connection opportunities, and access to local services.
According to Hertfordshire community information sources, OPALS events are friendly, sociable gatherings designed to reduce vulnerability, loneliness, and isolation among senior citizens. They bring together agencies, service providers, and community groups to offer free information, safety advice, networking opportunities, refreshments, and a hot meal. Events typically feature a mix of speakers, activity demonstrations, and market‑style stalls where residents can learn about support available in their area.
A Successful Turnout and Strong Community Impact
The Grovehill event saw an excellent turnout of 70 senior residents, with 54 completing feedback questionnaires. Dan and Nikki were proud to represent the organisation, connect with the local community, and support attendees throughout the day.
- 20 residents signed up for Home Safety Visits.
- 44 additional people will receive passed‑on information from attendees.
Because of the event:
- 40% now feel better able to manage their health and wellbeing
- 48% feel they can keep themselves safer
- 36% feel more connected to others
- 76% gained knowledge of support services available
These outcomes align perfectly with OPALS’ wider mission to improve safety awareness, health management, community knowledge, and overall well-being in later life.
Dan and Nikki's Experience
Dan and Nikki spent the day speaking with residents, supporting stallholders, and reconnecting with local partners. They were inspired by the strong community spirit in the room and the positive engagement from everyone who attended. Participating in OPALS events allows our team to:
- Strengthen our ties with community organisations
- Share our support services with local residents
- Learn directly from older people about their needs
- Work collaboratively to enhance wellbeing and independence in later life
They both described the event as “energising, informative, and a privilege to be part of.”
“Spending time out in the community together means so much to our Clients. Moments like this help build confidence, independence and genuine connections.
It’s incredibly rewarding to see the smiles and hear the stories that come from a simple day out. These experiences remind us why providing compassionate, person-centred care at home is so important to the people we support.”
– Nikki Smith | Deputy Manager, RAH Hemel Hempstead
Looking Ahead
With the success of the Grovehill event, OPALS continues its commitment to empowering older adults across Hertfordshire. The next OPALS event is scheduled for 25th March at the Fairway Tavern, Panshanger Golf Club, Welwyn Garden City.
Dan and Nikki look forward to attending future sessions and continuing their work supporting local older people with compassion, expertise, and community collaboration.
