Supporting People to Live Well

Right at Home Maidstone joined Xcel Health's 'Living Well with Arthritis' workshop to talk about the importance of maintaining independence and mobility.

The workshop brought together members of the local community to learn more about arthritis, challenge common misconceptions and explore ways to maintain mobility, confidence and quality of life.

Throughout the workshop, attendees heard from experienced clinicians at Xcel Health, who shared their expertise on arthritis, treatment options and practical strategies for managing day-to-day challenges. As part of the event, we were invited to give a short talk about a topic that sits at the heart of everything we do at Right at Home Maidstone - supporting people to maintain their independence.

We also had an information stand within the foyer, giving us the opportunity to speak with attendees, answer questions and discuss the importance of maintaining independence and accessing support at the right time.

What We Learned from the Workshops

One of the things that stood out to us during the workshop was just how many misconceptions still exist around arthritis.

The Xcel Health team spent time challenging common myths and helping attendees better understand the condition and the support options available to them. Several people commented that they left with a much clearer understanding of arthritis and felt more confident exploring the options available to them.

For us, this highlighted the importance of education and awareness. Knowledge itself can be incredibly empowering. The more people understand about their health, the more confident they often feel when discussing treatment options, accessing support and making informed decisions about their wellbeing.

It was a reminder that confidence doesn't only come from physical ability. It can also come from understanding a situation better and feeling more informed about what support is available.

Independence Means Different Things to Different People

When we speak to the people we support, regardless of their age or circumstances, the things that matter most are often very similar.

People want to remain in their own homes. They want to continue doing the things they enjoy. They want to spend time with family and friends. They want to remain in control of their own lives.

At Right at Home Maidstone, we believe independence looks different for everyone.

For some people, it may mean continuing to tend to a much-loved garden. For others, it might mean attending a community group, meeting friends for coffee or simply being able to maintain familiar routines at home.

Whatever independence means to the individual, it is something worth protecting and supporting.

Why Confidence Matters

One of the key messages we shared during the workshop was that changes often happen gradually. It's rarely one big event. Instead, small changes in everyday life can slowly begin to affect confidence.

In our experience, confidence can be just as important as physical ability. Sometimes people lose confidence before they lose ability.

When this happens, people may begin to do less, go out less often or withdraw from activities they previously enjoyed. That's why maintaining independence isn't just about what someone can physically do. It's about helping people feel confident enough to continue living the life they want to live.

Staying Active and Connected

Another key theme of the workshop was the importance of movement and remaining as active as possible.

Attendees took part in a practical movement session and were shown simple exercises that could be incorporated into everyday routines. One of our biggest reflections from the workshop was the strong connection between movement, confidence and independence.

While the workshop explored this from a clinical perspective, it reinforced something we regularly see when supporting people at home: staying active and maintaining social connections can play an important role in preserving confidence and independence.

Whether that's attending a local group, meeting friends, pursuing a hobby or simply getting out into the community, continuing to do the things we enjoy can make a real difference to wellbeing.

Support Doesn't Mean Losing Independence

When people think about receiving support, they often worry that it means losing independence. In reality, we often find the opposite is true. Many people simply need a little help to continue doing the things that matter most to them, whether that's getting out and about, maintaining a hobby, seeing friends and family or continuing their daily routines at home.
At Right at Home Maidstone, we believe independence isn't about doing everything alone. It's about continuing to live life in the way that matters to you. Often the right support at the right time can help someone maintain their independence for longer.

Working Together to Support Local People

We were grateful to Xavier, Manali and the team at Xcel Health for inviting us to be part of such an informative event.

While the clinical team focused on arthritis, mobility and treatment options, our contribution centred around the importance of maintaining independence, building confidence and staying connected to the people and activities that bring meaning to everyday life.

Events like these are a fantastic example of local organisations working together to support the health and wellbeing of the Maidstone community.

At Right at Home Maidstone, we don't replace healthcare professionals. Our role is to complement the fantastic work they do by helping people maintain routines, stay connected to their communities and continue living the life they want to live in the place they most want to be: their own home.

Looking Ahead

If there were two key messages we hope people took away from the workshop, they would be these.

  • Firstly, continue doing the things that matter to you for as long as possible. Whether that's meeting friends, attending a club, gardening or getting out for a coffee, staying connected can have a significant impact on wellbeing and confidence.

  • Secondly, don't wait until things become difficult before asking for support. Often, a small amount of support at the right time can prevent bigger challenges later on.

At Right at Home Maidstone, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to remain safe, independent and connected to the communities they love. With the right support, people can continue living life on their own terms for longer.
