Electric dreams for mum

Ever feel like the future is Now, technology is taking over and robots will rule the world? It can be tricky to reconcile if you grew up in a world of pay phones, snail mail and TV’s with only two channels available. Our home environment has changed little in the past decades until recently when we have experienced an avalanche of home app enabled and smart home devices.

Visiting many clients I have noticed how seniors have adopted devices that really help in their every day lives. I don’t mean this to come across the wrong way however my mum would really struggle to set up a smart thermometer and often family intervention and help may be required. Wifi is a must, there really is no way around this and it also has the added benefit of visitors such as grandchildren being able to use it when they visit.

Let’s explore some reasonably low cost innovations that can make a positive difference to senior people living in their own homes…

iPads

I say iPad because it’s easy to use, resilient and intuitive. I have seen many people that are completely at sea with a computer or phone but absolutely take to iPad with easy to use internet navigation, maps, pictures and messages. It’s a great device for shopping, reading articles, and being connected to local groups on social sites. My mum can’t get enough of knitting blogs and forums.

Alexa devices, Google Home & HomePod

They all offer similar capabilities, voice controlled and a lot of fun. Ask them the weather, travel updates, send and read messages, catch up on the latest news and ask for your favourite music. For those that want to go further that can connect them to door locks, control lighting and make family conference calls. For anyone that watched the BBC drama Years and Years this was a prominent feature of the use of home technology for Anne Read.

Ring

This is a really useful device. When your front door is approached it automatically records the visitor and sends it straight to your tablet or phone meaning you can see and speak to visitors without going to the door. Great for security and people with limited mobility.

Howz

This Manchester company is making waves. They have among many products an indoor motion monitor, smart plug and meter interface that tracks movement, knows when you put the kettle on and build a smart picture of your electricity use. Sounds complicated? Not so much it learns your habits and when anything is out of the ordinary it can alert you. Gives concerned family peace of mind and alerts when action is needed.

There is a lot out there, start small and introduce one thing at a time. During my visits to clients I have seen the positive benefits embracing home devices can have. Try it, have some fun. The future really is now.
