An Enjoyable Age & Dementia-Friendly Initiative
Love to Move is an enjoyable, age- and dementia-friendly movement programme that brings older people together through gentle exercise, music and social interaction. Sessions take place in Shoreham and Steyning and are designed to help older people stay active, improve coordination and enjoy spending time with others.
At Right at Home Worthing & Shoreham District, we're proud to have brought Love to Move to our local community. What started as an initiative we were passionate about has grown into a successful programme that continues to run and make a difference to people in the area.
What Is Love to Move?
Love to Move is a movement-to-music programme designed to help older people, including those living with dementia, stay active and engaged.
The sessions combine simple movements with familiar music and activities that encourage concentration, coordination and social interaction. The exercises are designed to be accessible, allowing people to join in at their own pace while enjoying the company of others.
The Programme has a demonstrable benefit in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people, and those older people having mild to advanced forms of dementia appear to benefit the most. This research was conducted by Age UK, June 2016.
In Japan, where the programme was developed, it has been found that people participating walk better and quicker.
Love to Move brings together physical activity, mental stimulation and social interaction, all of which can play an important part in healthy ageing. Taking part can help older people to:
Improve balance
Improve cognitive function
Keep active and maintain mobility.
Practise coordination and concentration.
Spend time with others and build friendships.
Enjoy the benefits of music, movement and social interaction.
Maintain confidence and independence in everyday life.
The Love to Move programme has helped some participants to use their hands again so they can feed themselves, do crafts, play bingo and socialise with friends and family. We've got some other great tips on keeping active which you can find in our information and support hub.
How Love to Move Came to Our Community
At Right at Home Worthing & Shoreham District, we've always believed that caring for people goes beyond the support we provide in their own homes. Helping older people stay active, connected and involved in their local community is just as important.
This is why we brought Love to Move to Shoreham and Steyning. We recognised the value of a programme that combines movement, mental stimulation and social interaction, particularly for older people and those living with dementia.
Since introducing Love to Move to the local community, the programme has grown and continues to thrive in its own right. We're incredibly proud to have brought it to the area and to see it continuing to bring people together and make a difference to older people's lives.
