Becoming Dementia Interpreters: Enhancing Understanding and Communication in Dementia Care

At Right at Home Worthing & Shoreham, we’re proud to be leading the way in specialist dementia training.

Supporting someone living with dementia goes far beyond providing personal care. It’s about connection, compassion and truly understanding the person behind the condition. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that two of our team members, Jan and Collette, have recently completed their training to become qualified Dementia Interpreters.

The Dementia Interpreter Programme, created by Training 2 Care and supported by the Dementia Dictionary, helps carers develop vital skills in interpreting the often subtle and non-verbal communication of people living with dementia. This includes recognising signs of distress, unmet needs and changes in mood or behaviour that may otherwise go unnoticed or misunderstood.

Now that Jan and Collette are qualified, they’ve taken on the fantastic role of training the rest of our team, ensuring that every member of staff, including our amazing carers, has the tools and knowledge to become qualified Dementia Interpreters too.

Jan shared her thoughts on the experience:
"Becoming a Dementia Interpreter has been an eye-opening and truly rewarding journey. It’s helped me see things from a different perspective and understand behaviours that might otherwise be misinterpreted. I’m so excited to now be training the rest of our team and making a real difference in how we care for our clients living with dementia."

This initiative is part of our continued commitment to deepening our understanding of dementia, improving how we communicate with clients and enhancing the quality of life for the people we support.

By empowering our team with these specialised skills, we’re able to provide even more person-centred, empathetic care. We can better recognise not just the physical needs of those living with dementia, but their emotional and psychological needs as well.
