Combating Loneliness at Christmas-
How to Stay Connected and Supported This Festive Season

Christmas is often seen as a time of joy, family, and togetherness. But for many people, it can be one of the loneliest times of the year. When the festive season is full of adverts and songs celebrating connection, those who are alone or have lost loved ones can feel especially isolated.

At Right at Home Worthing & Shoreham District, we see how loneliness can affect people’s wellbeing, particularly older adults or those living independently. But with the right support, no one has to face Christmas alone.

Why Loneliness Feels Stronger at Christmas

Shorter days, colder weather, and the focus on family gatherings can make December a difficult month. Some people experience reduced social contact, while mobility issues or health challenges can make it harder to get out and about. Loneliness affects mental health but can also impact physical wellbeing, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and even heart problems.

Simple Ways to Feel More Connected

Here are some ways to help yourself or a loved one feel less alone this Christmas:

  1. Reach Out Early- A quick phone call, video chat, or message can brighten someone’s day. Regular contact throughout December helps build connection and anticipation.
  2. Join Local Activities- There are lots of opportunities in our community to get involved. We run regular Carer Drop-In sessions, Love to Move classes, and Pottery sessions, all designed to help people stay active, social, and engaged. We also have special Christmas Love to Move sessions coming up, along with other festive events to bring people together.Get in contact with us to learn more or book on.
  3. Share Traditions-  Baking mince pies, putting up decorations, or listening to favourite carols together can make the season feel special, even in small ways.
  4. Volunteer or Give Back-  Helping others can lift your own spirits. Local charities, food banks, and community kitchens often welcome volunteers during the holidays.
  5. Ask for Support- If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Our carers provide companionship and emotional support, helping clients feel cared for, valued, and included at this time of year.

You’re Not Alone

Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea and a chat, going for a winter walk, or helping wrap gifts, our friendly carers are here to make every day a little brighter.

If you or someone you love could benefit from companionship care this Christmas, contact Right at Home Worthing & Shoreham District. Together, we can help make the festive season a time of warmth, connection, and community.
