Roger Ferris: A Life in Music, Movement, and Joy

Published: 17/09/2025

At Right at Home Shoreham and Worthing, our Love to Move sessions are about so much more than gentle chair based exercises. They are about connection, laughter, and celebrating the incredible lives of the people who join us. Few stories are as inspiring, fascinating, and full of life as Roger Ferris’s.

Roger’s journey through music began in a rather unusual way. He started as the boom operator on World of Sport, a small but important first step into a world that would see him working alongside some of the most legendary names in British music. In the late 1960s, he became part of the team at Abbey Road Studios, one of the most iconic music studios in the world. There, he contributed to tracks on the Beatles’ Let It Be album, including unforgettable songs like The Long and Winding Road and Across the Universe. These were some of the final tracks the band recorded together, and Roger played a part in helping to shape the sound that millions of people around the world still love today. He often recalls those days with fondness, remembering the excitement, the creativity, and the magic of being at the centre of such historic moments in music.

Roger’s talent extended beyond engineering. He became a prolific songwriter, penning the Top 30 UK hit My Last Night With You for The Arrows. He co wrote songs for Racey and Smokie and even wrote the music for the 1970s comedy series On the Buses, including the lively theme Keep What You Got. Along the way, he also worked with The Hollies, adding another chapter to a life defined by music, creativity, and collaboration.

Music runs deep in Roger’s family. His son, Dominic Ferris, has followed in his footsteps, becoming a talented musician in his own right. The bond they share through music is a living legacy, showing how passion and talent can pass through generations. For Roger, seeing Dominic thrive and knowing that music remains at the heart of his family is a source of immense pride and joy.

But Roger’s story is not only about his incredible achievements in music. In his later years, he has embraced new ways to stay active, engaged, and connected. He practices Tai Chi and Pilates, finding calm, balance, and strength in these gentle exercises. He also takes part in our Love to Move sessions, where he enjoys moving to music, connecting with other participants, and experiencing the joy that comes from being part of a supportive community. He describes the programme as giving him more confidence, more interaction, and more patience with other people. He speaks warmly of the Love to Move team, calling Cherry and Anna fantastic, and he encourages anyone to give it a try.

Watching Roger in a session, you see a man who has touched the lives of millions through his music now finding joy in new moments. He sways to the rhythm, taps along to the beat, shares a laugh, and connects with other participants in ways that are inspiring and heartwarming. His energy, warmth, and curiosity remind us that every person has a story worth celebrating, and that life, even after decades of remarkable achievement, can still offer new adventures, new friendships, and new confidence.

Roger is still performing today with his band Smokestack, a testament to his enduring passion for music and his refusal to let age define what he can do. In the Love to Move sessions, he brings the same rhythm, creativity, and joy that marked his career, enriching the community around him and inspiring everyone who joins the class.

Every session with our Love to Move community is a celebration of life, connection, and joy. People like Roger show that music, movement, and friendship can combine to make everyday moments extraordinary. His story reminds us that no matter what stage of life we are at, it is possible to continue learning, sharing, and embracing new experiences.
