Behind the Scenes: A LiveIn Carer’s Week

A Week in the Life of a Live-In Carer
Live-in care may look effortless from the outside, but behind it is a combination of thoughtful gestures, careful observation, and genuine compassion. It’s about finding the right balance — being present when needed, yet respecting someone’s independence. Sometimes that means assisting with mobility, and other times it’s as simple as preparing the perfect cup of tea.
Recently, I spent two weeks with a new Client who was just beginning their live-in care journey. Before arriving, I spoke with him and his daughter to learn about his daily routine, preferences, and priorities. The first day was all about listening, observing, and gently introducing myself into his life — ensuring he felt at home while also giving him space.
Building Trust and Understanding
As the days went on, we developed a natural rhythm. We talked about his interests, swapped recommendations for TV shows, and explored new ideas for meals. I made sure he stayed well-hydrated during the hot summer days, felt clean and comfortable, and could move safely around his home — even during the night, if needed.
Personalised, Dignified Support
An important part of my role was supporting his catheter needs. To maintain both his comfort and dignity, I followed his established routine — changing his leg bag weekly, checking his night bag, and emptying the leg bag throughout the day. These small but vital tasks ensured he could go about his day without worry.
Encouraging Independence
As our time together progressed, he became more involved in his own care — choosing his meals, initiating conversations, and taking pride in his daily activities. Live-in care is about more than just meeting physical needs; it’s about fostering confidence, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of normalcy.
More Than Just a Job
By the time my stay ended, it no longer felt like work. It felt like I had been looking after a friend. Live-in care is built on those small daily routines, the quiet reassurances, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing someone is there for you — always ready to step in when needed, and happy to step back when not.
That’s the true beauty of live-in care: it’s not only about keeping life running smoothly, but about making life feel right.
