Is the Tradition of Sending Postcards Becoming a Thing of the Past?

Recent news from English Heritage has sparked discussion about the future of a much-loved British tradition: sending postcards. According to a survey commissioned by the charity, more than half of people in the UK say they never send postcards, raising concerns that this simple gesture could gradually become a nostalgic memory rather than a regular part of family life.

To help encourage a new generation to embrace postcard writing, English Heritage has launched a summer initiative offering free illustrated postcards to children visiting selected heritage sites. The campaign celebrates the joy of handwritten messages and the meaningful connections they can create.

For many older people, postcards hold a special place in their memories. Whether sent from a family holiday, a day trip to the seaside or a visit to a historic landmark, they often became treasured keepsakes that were read, displayed and saved for years. Unlike a text message or email, a postcard is something tangible that can be held, revisited and shared with others.
