How Regular Visits Help Older People Stay Connected in Southampton

Staying Connected Matters at Every Age
As we get older, keeping in touch with family, friends and the local community can become more difficult. Health conditions, reduced mobility or no longer driving can make it harder to get out and about, even for people who have always enjoyed being active.
A regular visit from a familiar face can make a real difference. It is not always about having somewhere special to go. Sometimes, sitting down for a cup of tea, chatting about the week's news or enjoying a short walk together is enough to brighten someone's day.
At Right at Home Southampton, we often see how these everyday moments help people stay connected to the things they enjoy. They also give families peace of mind, knowing their loved one is continuing to enjoy life beyond the four walls of home. Our Director, Kev, enjoys sharing these “magic moments” with our Client's friends and families.
Small Outings Can Make a Big Difference
Companionship is about spending time together in a way that suits the individual. For one person, that might be a visit to a favourite café. For another, it could be looking around a garden centre, enjoying an afternoon by the sea or visiting a local attraction they have always loved.
One place our Clients have particularly enjoyed visiting is SeaCity Museum in Southampton. The museum shares the city's rich maritime history, including the story of the Titanic, and offers a relaxed environment where visitors can explore at their own pace. Afterwards, many enjoy sitting together in the museum's café for a hot drink and a chat.
Outings like these are not about fitting as much as possible into the day. They are about enjoying familiar places, taking things slowly and creating opportunities for conversation and shared experiences.
Community Events Bring People Together
Taking part in local events is another great way for older people to stay connected with others and enjoy something different.
Earlier this month, several of our Clients joined us at the Big Green Picnic in Southampton, where they spent time with local residents, families and members of the community. It was a lovely opportunity to enjoy good company, take part in activities and spend time outdoors together.
Community events like these help people meet new faces, enjoy shared experiences and continue feeling part of the local community. For many, simply getting out and spending time with others can bring confidence and give them something to look forward to.
If you'd like to read more about the day, you can find the full story in our Big Green Picnic blog.
Discovering Southampton Together
Southampton has many places that are well suited to relaxed outings for older people.
For those who enjoy culture and history, SeaCity Museum offers accessible exhibitions and comfortable spaces to explore. Southampton City Art Gallery provides step-free access and a varied collection of artwork that visitors can enjoy at their own pace.
Others may prefer spending time outdoors. Southampton Common is a popular choice, with wide paths, open green spaces and plenty of benches to stop and enjoy the surroundings. For anyone who enjoys live entertainment, Mayflower Theatre offers accessible seating and a range of performances throughout the year.
Of course, an enjoyable outing does not always have to involve a well-known attraction. A walk along the seafront, visiting local shops or meeting for coffee can be just as meaningful. The important part is spending time together and continuing to enjoy the places that have always been part of someone's life.
Making Time for Meaningful Moments
Many older people say the simple things are often the most memorable. Looking through old photographs, feeding the ducks, browsing a bookshop or sharing a favorite cake can become moments that people look forward to each week.
These experiences also help maintain routines, encourage conversation and support emotional wellbeing. For families, knowing their loved one continues to enjoy these everyday pleasures can be incredibly reassuring.
At Right at Home Southampton, we believe that helping people stay connected with their local community is an important part of living well at home. Whether it is enjoying a visit to a favorite place, attending a local event or simply sharing a cup of tea and a conversation, these moments can make a real difference.
