What Makes Right at Home Different for Clients in Dunmow?

We are an independently owned franchise within a network whose no.1 priority is quality. Right at Home is widely recognised as a top UK home care provider - in 2023 homecare.co.uk placed us as the third best-rated provider in the UK.

This was even more remarkable because of Right at Home's relative size vs the top 5. We were at least 11 times bigger than the others.

But what about this office I hear you ask! Well, we operate like a family because we share the same values: we are led by people who are driven to provide quality care to you or your loved one & all new joiners to the team are expected to share these values too.

We fully live the values-based approach and you can always expect us to adhere to these values.

Fun Fact: Great Dunmow is home to a historic and picturesque building known as the "Dunmow Maltings." This is one of the oldest surviving maltings in the United Kingdom. The Dunmow Maltings was constructed in the 16th century and was used for the malting and brewing of beer, a vital industry in England at the time.

Today, the Dunmow Maltings is a Grade II* listed building, and while it is no longer used for brewing, it remains a fascinating piece of local history. It's a great example of the architectural and industrial heritage of the area, and it's also a charming place to visit if you're interested in historical buildings.

The Flitch Trials

Great Dunmow is well known for its 'Flitch Trials', a local tradition whereby couples must convince a jury of six local bachelors and six local maidens that they have never wished themselves un-wed for a year and a day. The successful couple are paraded through the streets of Great Dunmow and they are awarded a flitch of bacon.

This tradition dates back to the 12th Century and we can assume it had become well known within a few hundred years as it was referred to by Chaucer in "The Wife of Bath's Tale" without much explanation!

Famous Residents

Two members of the world famous electronic punk group The Prodigy were from Dunmow. Liam Howlett and Keith Flint. Liam still lives in the town and so did Keith until his death in 2019. The Prodigy burst onto the scene in 1994 with the album Music for the Jilted Generation and then went on to release the commercial highlight of their career, The Fat of the Land, in 1997. This album was no.1 in 16 different countries, including the US and the UK, and included well known tracks such as "Firestarter".

A well-known resident locally is, of course, the Town Crier, pictured opposite.
