What is dementia?

Dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Dementia is not a disease in its own right, so the symptoms of dementia vary from person to person. It is actually an umbrella term which is used to describe a group of symptoms related to cognitive function.

Symptoms of dementia commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception.

There are approximately 400 types of dementia, with the most common types being Alzheimers’ disease and Vascular dementia.

Caring for someone with Dementia

There are common misconceptions about the outcomes for someone diagnosed with dementia. Many people believe that there are limited options for people with dementia and the only choice is inevitably residential care.

However, studies have shown that quality care at home can have a real impact on stabilising the most common dementia symptoms. In fact, dementia homecare can even slow the progression of the condition. As our understanding of the condition has increased, so has supporting evidence for in-home care for dementia patients.

A healthy diet, suitable exercise and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to have a positive impact on dementia symptoms. So we work with our Clients to ensure their care plan meets all of these needs.

"Right at Home provide an excellent level of care for my 94-year-old mum who has Alzheimer's. My mum, although somewhat hesitant at first at having strangers in the house, quickly bonded with them and she now looks forward to their visits. The ladies are all very happy to help with any cleaning, laundry etc., or just provide companionship, and mum was recently taken out to a local beauty spot to feed the ducks. I feel that mum is benefiting greatly from the visits as she feels less on her own when I can't be there. Everyone I have dealt with has been very helpful from the Care Manager, Carers and the Accounts department. I would not hesitate to recommend Right at Home to anyone."

FAQs about our homecare for dementia sufferers in Ealing, Hounslow, Hammersmith and Fulham

Can a dementia patient be cared for at home?

With the right care and support from trained professionals like our Ealing-based Carers, it’s realistic to manage dementia at home.

Many prospective Clients ask us: ‘when should someone with dementia go into a care home?’. Residential care isn’t what’s best for everyone, particularly as many people living with dementia benefit from a familiar, reassuring environment.

We offer different types of care that work in tandem to create a personalised care plan for all stages of dementia. Speak to our team in Ealing to discuss your specific circumstances and any concerns you may have.

At what point do dementia patients need 24-hour care?

24 hour dementia care at home can be invaluable for older people and anyone struggling with the late stages of dementia. There is no specific stage at which dementia patients need 24-hour assistance, as everyone experiences the condition differently. But full-time domiciliary care can provide peace of mind whenever caring for someone with dementia becomes unmanageable.

At Right at Home Ealing, we’ll define an agreed care schedule from our range of dementia care services. If you are interested in full-time care for a dementia sufferer, we can combine various types of care. We can allocate specialist Carers across Ealing to incorporate dementia specialist homecare into a care plan for live in care or 24 hour homecare.

Can someone with dementia live alone?

At Right at Home Ealing, many of our Clients are people with dementia who continue to live independently at home, across Ealing.

People experience dementia symptoms and their progression at different rates. As such, many people with dementia can continue to live alone for some time.

In the advanced stages of dementia, live in care or 24 hour dementia care from our Carers in Ealing can offer peace of mind whilst allowing Clients to remain in their home.

Do dementia patients do better at home?

Familiar surroundings and regular routines are key to reducing distress for people with dementia. Confusion and disorientation are common symptoms of dementia, so we aim to reduce any uncertainty.

That’s why it’s ideal for our Clients to receive consistent support in the familiar home environment. Working with the same specially trained, Ealing-based CareGivers on a regular basis can provide stability and reassurance for our Clients. We are proud to help people to remain a part of the Ealing community.
