Long-Term Success Through Outstanding Care

Mark Beeby tells us how he overcame early challenges and achieved an 'Oustanding' rating.

Making the Jump into Franchising

One of our long-standing Franchise Owners, Mark Beeby has been with us since 2014 when he launched Right at Home South Trafford. As an early franchisee, Mark has seen the franchise support offering become increasingly sophisticated through investment in specialist support roles. Leaning into this year on year, he says, has not only supported growth but also helped him achieve his career highlight of a coveted Outstanding CQC rating.

In Mark’s early career before joining us, he had worked in civil engineering, and after gaining an MBA and MA in Marketing, he utilised his skills in various industries and sectors. But he had always wanted to be his own boss and saw an opportunity in franchising to finally make this aspiration a reality.

Mark explains, “I wanted to give myself a chance to do things my way. I also knew that I had a preference for a wide variety of tasks rather than being in a narrowly focused job role. In managing a business, you really do have to do a bit of everything and that appealed to me hugely.”

Why a Homecare Franchise?

Mark had an interest in franchising from the outset, but was unsure which sector to enter.

He says, “My background was in ‘hard’ industries such as civil engineering and manufacturing. I had no experience in care but did have a strong customer focus and a desire to do something worthwhile. I saw an advertisement for a broker who matches people to franchise businesses so I went with them thinking I needed a quick course in what opportunities were actually out there.”

“After looking at various different franchises, I settled on Right at Home. Part of the reason was that homecare is a growth industry due to the ageing population, and part was that Right at Home stood out against other franchise opportunities because it was clear that their values aligned with my own.”

Right at Home is a values-led franchisor, and having that match in outlook, mindset and ethics is important when selecting our Franchise Owners. Each potential franchisee goes through a rigorous selection process to determine if they are a good fit for our culture. Mark remembers speaking with Ken Deary, Owner and Chairman of Right at Home UK, during his own application process.

“I met Ken and it was very clear through all our discussions that Right at Home was all about ethics, high levels of customer service, and quality. This was a match with my values so it was the best option. I would rather be part of something that provides great customer service than be part of a business that has to be cost and volume focused. Our Clients are people and we can and should make a positive impact for them and their families.”

Making Full Use of National Office Support

Mark acknowledges that the support from National Office was very different when he began his Right at Home journey, but he has always found the help to be invaluable.

“Right at Home UK was very young when I started. At that time, there were only a few people at National Office supporting me, but even so, there was a defined plan that meant we could get going and everyone worked hard to make sure we had the support we needed.”

“Since then, I always make full use of the National Office support on offer and it has really paid off. Now, there are so many people involved in assisting new franchisees and established ones like me. This includes all areas such as compliance, marketing, recruitment and general business planning. National Office also finds and negotiates good supplier deals for us which is another perk that I appreciate. Right at Home is now a very strong and established brand across the UK and I’m very proud to be part of it. It attracts good employees, suppliers want to do business with us, and potential clients want us to provide care for their loved ones.”

Achieving an ‘Outstanding’ Rating

In 2026, Right at Home South Trafford was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and came out of it with an ‘Outstanding’ rating — an improvement on their previous rating of ‘Good’ and the highest possible rating that can be given by the regulator. Mark calls this moment his career highlight.

An ‘Outstanding’ rating means inspectors found exceptional standards at the business, not just in how care is delivered, but in the culture, leadership and values that shape every Client interaction. When it comes to Right at Home South Trafford, the inspection report gives a clear insight into the person-centred culture Mark has cultivated. One stand-out section records how one of their Carers helped reconnect a Client with former colleagues from their healthcare career, arranging a supported afternoon tea at home for a meaningful reunion that hadn't been possible for years.

Reflecting on this achievement, Mark pays a touching tribute to his team:

"We were absolutely delighted to have been rated Outstanding by the CQC. Our focus has always been on providing the highest standards of care for our Clients, and our incredible team really deserved this recognition. They show so much dedication and compassion every day and make such a big positive impact in the lives of our Clients. I’m so proud of them."

Overcoming Recruitment Challenges

With twelve years in the business, Mark has seen plenty of ups and downs, especially in the early days when he was still finding his feet.

He says, “The greatest challenge early on in my journey was finding a good Registered Manager. The Right at Home brand hadn’t been around in this country for long and I had to build a reputation in my territory from the ground up. Recruitment was extremely challenging and I had to work extra hard to get our vision across to applicants and show what a wonderful, person-centred care company we are. Things have changed a lot since then of course, and the brand is much more established and Right at Home is a very attractive proposition for potential and experienced Registered Managers, especially with all the support they get from National Office and other Registered Managers in the network.”

How to Build an Effective Care Team

The challenge around recruitment became a particularly valuable experience for Mark, who has since become somewhat of an expert on building an effective team and retaining the best talent for Right at Home South Trafford.

He explains, “I always promote from within where possible and I make sure to look after the Carers so that turnover is low. It is not just about pay, but a feeling of being part of a team and knowing that they are valued. Finding the right Registered Manager is very important as they play a big part in building the culture and leading from the front for the whole team.”

Having seen some significant changes to care and employment regulation over his 12 years in the sector, Mark emphasises the learning curve he’s been guided through.

“There have been many lessons I’ve had to learn, and we are all still learning which I think is a good thing. The homecare sector is a competitive landscape that keeps changing so I need to stay on my toes.”

Mark’s Advice for Prospective Franchise Owners

So, what would Mark’s advice be for others thinking of joining Right at Home as a franchise owner?

“The best thing about being a Right at Home Franchise Owner is having a collaborative network and being part of an exceptional brand. Whatever challenges you face, it is important to be positive and remember you can always draw on support from National Office and the wider network. You can be confident that Right at Home is a very supportive environment. Lastly, don’t hesitate to reach out for advice when needed!”
