Homecare Support Plans That Build Trust: Roger's Story
Published: 08/10/2025
We first met Roger following his planned knee replacement surgery at Spire Private Hospital. A lively and independent 70-year-old, Roger had always enjoyed staying active—especially at the local golf course, where he loved practising his swing.
While he was eager to return home and focus on his recovery, he was also realistic about the challenges ahead. With reduced mobility, an increased risk of falls, and no family nearby to help, Roger knew the first few weeks back home could be difficult to manage alone.
Challenges and Concerns
Although Roger was determined to maintain his independence, the physical demands of post-operative recovery made certain tasks—like getting up safely at night, preparing meals, and moving confidently around the house—far more difficult. He wasn’t used to asking for help, and the idea of relying on others didn’t come easily. But he also recognised that without short-term support, his recovery could be slower and more stressful than it needed to be. The challenge was to create a support plan that offered the right level of help, while still allowing Roger to feel in control of his own progress.
Building Trust and Social Connections
With consistent support and reassurance, Roger’s strength and confidence began to return. Each day, he made steady progress—starting with short walks around his home and gradually preparing his own light meals again as his mobility improved.
Our team gradually reduced the level of care as his recovery progressed, first phasing out the overnight support and then moving to less visits during the day.
By the end of the third week, Roger was managing his daily routine independently. He appreciated that his care had never felt intrusive—instead, it felt like having someone in his corner, cheering him on toward recovery.
Impact to Roger
Now fully mobile and back to enjoying his usual routine, Roger has returned to the driving range—building up strength in his knee and working on his swing with quiet determination.
He’s told us how much he values the support he received during those early weeks—not just for the practical help, but for the sense of reassurance and motivation it brought.
With the right care at the right time, Roger was able to recover in the comfort of his own home, on his own terms. And for him, that made all the difference.
Creating the Right Care Plan
At Right at Home Lymm and Warrington South, we understand that returning home after surgery can feel daunting without the right support in place. That’s why we worked with Roger — and his hospital discharge team—to build a person-centred care plan that prioritised both safety and independence.
From the moment he arrived home, our carers were there to make the transition smooth and comfortable—preparing a home-cooked meal, helping him settle in, and making sure his living space was safe and accessible.
Over the following two weeks, our team provided daily and overnight care, assisting with personal tasks, helping with physiotherapy exercises, and offering gentle encouragement every step of the way. Most importantly, we matched Roger with carers who respected his independence and motivated him to take small but meaningful steps forward.
