The Day Everything Had to Be Done Right: A Memorable Moment of Care by Kathren Ainsclough
Some days in care are routine in the best possible way. Then there are others that remind you exactly why this work matters.
One particular day still sits with me because it showed how quickly things can unravel when systems fail, and how much difference the right people can make when time really matters.
Help When None Was Available
The call came about a man who had been repeatedly let down by another care service provider. By the time we became involved and arrived, he was vulnerable, exhausted, and without the support he needed.
Situations like this aren’t rare, but they are never acceptable. When someone is already at the most fragile point in their life, delays by someone they should rely on aren’t just inconvenient; they’re devastating.
As soon as we arrived and saw what we were faced with, the day became about coordination. Phones rang constantly. We were having conversations with health professionals, equipment providers, and care teams back-to-back. Everyone needed the same information, and everyone needed it immediately.
Care sometimes feels like detective work mixed with diplomacy. You ask the right questions, push when necessary, and keep the person at the centre of every decision, even when the clock is ticking.
Getting the Job Done Right
By the end of the day, we had managed to get everything he needed in place. The equipment he needed had been sourced. The care plan was organised. Arrangements were confirmed so he could transfer to a care home with dignity rather than uncertainty. There was no fanfare, no applause, just a quiet sense of relief that he wouldn’t be left unsupported.
The following day, every piece of equipment was there, ready for him. Sadly, shortly afterwards, after he had settled into his care home, he passed away - but the fact that he did with the dignity and care he deserved is the most important thing.
That’s the part people don’t always expect when they think about care. Sometimes the job isn’t about long-term relationships or gradual progress. Sometimes it’s about making sure someone doesn't experience failure again at the very end.
Care, at its core, is about respect. Respect for time, for comfort, and for the fact that every person deserves the right support, no matter how complex or last-minute the situation may seem.
The Importance of Our Work
Working in care teaches you that some systems don’t always talk to each other. Families are often left trying to connect dots they shouldn’t have to understand. One of the most important parts of my role is knowing who to contact, how to escalate concerns, and how to push things without losing compassion along the way. Knowledge, built over years, becomes a form of reassurance for families who are already overwhelmed.
Moments like this also reinforce why communication matters so much. Clear updates, honest conversations, and realistic expectations help reduce panic. Care isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about being steady when it isn’t. That steadiness can make an unbearable situation just a little more manageable.
After days like that, you go home, sit quietly for a moment, and let it settle. Care work doesn’t switch off the second you leave the office. You carry these stories and instances with you, both the heavy ones and the hopeful ones. The heavy ones remind you why the best care standards matter. The hopeful ones remind you that doing things properly still counts.
