Sydenham Local History and Places to Visit

Historically, the area was very affluent, with the Crystal Palace being relocated to nearby Sydenham Hill in 1854.

The Crystal Palace was originally built for the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park.  The immense glass building was bought by a private company after the exhibtion, dismantled and re-erected on Sydenham Hill. Exhibitions, concerts, conferences and sporting events were held at the Crystal Palace (until it burned down in 1936).  Sydenham became very with new houses being built.  In 1871 the French impressionist painter and local resident Camille Pissarro produced The Avenue, Sydenham, a largely still recognisable view on today's Lawrie Park Avenue.

For almost 50 years the massive glass building (108ft high and 408ft in length), became “the most important single location for music making in the United Kingdom”.  The concerts were of a scale hard to imagine today.  The tri-annual Handel choral festivals set new musical standards and introduced a unparalleled range of repertory to a vast new audience - records show up to 3,500 choristers, 500 instruments and 30,000 seated spectators!

Sydenham Hill, with views of the London skyline is one of the highest points in the captial at 112m above sea level.

Sydenham has a very active community, with several groups concerning the local area. The Sydenham Society is a Civil society formed in 1972 to represent the local community. It holds local events, works with organisations and authorities as well as campaigning for improvements to the area.

Sydenham Arts is a registered charity providing arts activities and events all year round from their permanent home and performance space at the Sydenham Centre.

Sydenham Centre this popular community space holds a mix of local organisations, events, activities and services for local and vulnerable people.   The Centre’s main focus is around arts, dance, physical movement and wellbeing activities.

La Petite Bouchee this brasserie in Wells Park is an an award winning restaurant. The dining room is the interior of a 1971 Citroën HY van with room for just four.  The food is classic – moules Provencale, croque madames and salad Lyonnaise.
