A Visit to St Christopher's Hospice
For clients receiving end-of-life care at home, we partner with other charitable organisations such as Marie Curie Nurses and Macmillan Cancer Support to ensure our clients receive the best care possible. We also work alongside the palliative care team from locally based St Christopher's Hospice.
We recently met their fundraising team at a business networking event. The team works tirelessly and with great creativity to help raise enough donations to support the hospice care for the one thousand or so people it has on its current patient list. A significant part of the funds raised come form the 21 (no less!) local charity shops it operates with paid staff and an army of volunteers. Total annual budget of the hospice (a registered charity) is £22.6m. All services are provided free of charge to patients.
Founded by Dame Cicely Saunders in 1967 St Christopher’s is widely recognised as the first modern hospice. They provide care and support for people across five boroughs (Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark). St Christopher’s is one of the largest providers of palliative care education in the world and is committed to an ongoing programme of research, directed at improving care for patients and those close to them.
A cornerstone of their service is the idea of "What matters most". They take time to understand what matters most to each patient. Small details and attention to detail can make a huge difference to the quality of care provided. This person-centred approach has help them build a reputation for high quality care and an "Outstanding" rating from the Care Quality Commission.
Local residents are lucky to have this world leading facility on their doorstep.
