Feed my Lambs! Tend my Sheep!
All of us working in homecare sector wince every time we hear reporters and politicians (with little first hand knowledge) categorising social care as "low-skilled low-paid work".
It was terrific therefore to hear a truer view on a recent episode of Radio 4's Thought for the Day. The guest speaker was the Rev Isabelle Hamley. She reminded us of the real value of care in clear and simple language. Here in short is her message:-
Hear the call to give and receive care!
Our society places maximum value on productivity, output and profit.
The value and wealth that comes from CARE is intangible and often hidden.
Through caring for each other we learn to be human together.
We can discover unexpected treasures of joy.
Character and kindness are what matter most.
The risen Christ’s final command to Peter....
"Feed my Lambs! Tend my Sheep!"
Was to care for others.
With no strings, no expectations, no justification and no outcomes….
Other than to cherish one another with dignity and humanity!
At Right at Home Mitcham Streatham and Dulwich we know through direct experience care is a vocation. It is not for everyone. But for those born with the desire to care for others, it is a job that fills them - day in day out - with pride and joy in the knowledge that they have met the needs and raised the spirits of some of the most vulnerable adults in our community.
