Caring for Those Who Care: Why Taking Time for Yourself Matters

How a little support can give family carers valuable time to rest, recharge and look after themselves.

Published: 03/09/2026

Caring for a loved one starts with caring for yourself

Looking after someone you love can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. When so much of your time is focused on another person’s needs, it can be easy to overlook your own.

Taking time for yourself is not selfish- it is an important part of being able to continue providing care. Even a short, regular break can help you rest, recharge and return feeling more like yourself. With the right support, you can continue playing an important role in your loved one’s life without having to manage everything alone.

Recognising when you need a break

When you care for someone, it is natural to put their needs before your own. However, over time, the demands of caring can begin to affect your physical health, emotional well-being and everyday life.

Feeling constantly tired, overwhelmed, irritable or unable to make time for things you enjoy may be signs that you need some additional support. Recognising these feelings does not mean you are letting your loved one down- it simply means that you are human.

Taking a regular break gives you an opportunity to rest and recharge. Looking after your own well-being can help you feel more able to continue providing the care and companionship your loved one needs.

The difference a little time can make

Taking a break does not need to mean spending hours away from your loved one. Even having one hour a week to yourself can make a meaningful difference to your well-being.

You might use that time to meet a friend, go for a walk, attend an appointment or simply enjoy a quiet cup of tea. Whatever you choose, having regular time to focus on yourself can help reduce stress and restore your energy.

Making time for yourself is not selfish. It is an important part of maintaining your own health and helping you continue caring for your loved one.
