The Big Green Picnic Returns This Summer
After the incredible success of last year's event, Right at Home Swindon is delighted to invite clients, families, carers and members of the local community to join us for the Big Green Picnic 2026.
Taking place on Wednesday 22nd July at 12pm at The Tawny Owl, the Big Green Picnic is a nationwide initiative run in partnership with Dementia Adventure. The campaign encourages people to come together, enjoy the outdoors, build meaningful connections and raise awareness of dementia in a positive and inclusive way.
The event is all about celebrating community, reducing isolation and creating opportunities for people living with dementia and their loved ones to enjoy time together. Following the wonderful atmosphere, laughter and support shown at last year's picnic, we're looking forward to making even more special memories this summer.
What is the Big Green Picnic?
The Big Green Picnic is a national campaign created by Dementia Adventure and supported by Right at Home offices across the UK. Its aim is to encourage communities to come together in outdoor spaces, celebrate connection, and challenge the stigma that can often surround dementia.
At Dementia Adventure, the focus is on helping people living with dementia remain active, connected and engaged with the world around them. Research continues to highlight the benefits that nature, social interaction and outdoor experiences can have on wellbeing, confidence and quality of life.
The Big Green Picnic provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy these benefits while supporting a fantastic cause. Whether attending with family, friends, neighbours or as part of the local community, everyone is welcome to join us for an afternoon of food, entertainment and companionship.
Looking Back at Last Year's Big Green Picnic
Last year's Big Green Picnic was held at Willowbrook View Care Home in Wichelstowe and brought together clients, families, carers, residents and members of the local community for a truly memorable afternoon.
Guests enjoyed a delicious picnic spread including sandwiches, cakes and refreshments while local singer Cally entertained everyone with music spanning several decades. Throughout the afternoon there was plenty of laughter, conversation and even some dancing in the sunshine. A spontaneous game of catch quickly became one of the day's highlights, proving that sometimes the simplest activities create the most meaningful moments.
Ray's Ice Cream was a particular favourite with attendees, helping everyone stay cool during the warm weather, while the charity raffle generated excitement and helped raise additional funds for Dementia Adventure. Thanks to the generosity of attendees and local businesses, the event raised £160 to support the charity's work helping people living with dementia access the benefits of nature and outdoor experiences.
Most importantly, the event brought people together. New friendships were formed, existing relationships strengthened and everyone left with smiles on their faces.
A Word from the Team
"The Big Green Picnic perfectly captures what community care is all about. It's an opportunity to bring people together, create meaningful connections and remind everyone that living with dementia should never mean missing out on life's special moments."
