National Afternoon Tea Week: More Than Just a Cuppa

Celebrating the comfort, companionship and connection that can begin with a simple cup of tea.

Published: 14/08/2026

A Week Worth Raising a Teacup To

National Afternoon Tea Week is an annual celebration of the much-loved British tradition of afternoon tea. It is a chance to put the kettle on, enjoy a few tasty treats and appreciate the simple pleasure of sharing refreshments with others.

From traditional sandwiches and scones to cakes, biscuits and, of course, a freshly made cup of tea, everyone has their own idea of the perfect spread. Whether celebrated at home, in a local café or with friends and family, the week is all about taking a break from our busy routines and enjoying a timeless tradition together.

Throughout this article, we explore why a simple cuppa can be so meaningful and share the results of a light-hearted debate from our office.

The Difference a Cuppa Can Make

A cup of tea may seem like a small part of the day, but sharing one with someone can mean so much more. It creates an opportunity to pause, enjoy a friendly conversation and spend meaningful time together.

For someone who lives alone or does not regularly see friends and family, a cuppa and a chat could be the highlight of their day.

At Right at Home, we understand that these small moments can have a much bigger impact. That is why companionship is an important part of the support our CareGivers provide, from sharing a cup of tea and listening to someone’s stories to simply being there for a friendly chat.

This National Afternoon Tea Week, make time for someone who could benefit from a little extra company. Whether it is a family member, friend or neighbour, putting the kettle on and having a chat could make a real difference to their day.

The Great Cuppa Debate: Cake or Biscuits?

To celebrate National Afternoon Tea Week, we brought the debate into the Right at Home office for our weekly “This or That” vote. Everyone who visited the office was asked one very important question: what goes best with a cuppa, cake or biscuits?

The final scores were:

🍰 Cake: 1
🍪 Biscuits: 7

After a week of voting, biscuits was crowned the winner!

Whichever side you are on, we can all agree that tea, a tasty treat and good company make the perfect combination.

Time to put the kettle on

National Afternoon Tea Week is a lovely reminder that making time for others can have a real impact. A cup of tea, a friendly chat and a little company may seem simple, but they can mean so much to someone who needs them.

This week, why not check in with a family member, friend or neighbour and invite them to share a cuppa? Your time and company could be the highlight of their day.

Happy National Afternoon Tea Week from everyone at Right at Home Swindon! ☕💙
