Protecting Yourself This Winter: Why It’s Important to Book Your Flu Jab

As the colder months approach, taking steps to protect our health becomes increasingly important. Flu is more than a heavy cold and can cause serious illness, particularly for older people and those with certain health conditions.

The flu vaccine is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell. In this article, we explain why the flu jab is important, who can receive it and how to book your appointment.

Flu is a highly infectious illness that can make anyone feel very unwell. For older people, those with long-term health conditions and people with weakened immune systems, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or make existing health problems worse.

The flu vaccine helps reduce your risk of catching flu and becoming seriously ill. While no vaccine provides complete protection, having your flu jab may mean that your symptoms are milder and you recover more quickly if you do catch the virus.

Getting vaccinated can also help protect the people around you, including relatives, friends and others who may be more vulnerable to serious illness. As flu viruses can change over time, the vaccine is updated each year, which is why eligible people are encouraged to receive it annually.

In England, the NHS offers a free flu vaccine to people who are more likely to become seriously unwell from flu. This includes people aged 65 and over, those with certain long-term health conditions, pregnant women and people living in long-stay residential care homes.

Some carers, close contacts of people with weakened immune systems and eligible frontline social care workers may also receive the vaccine for free. Children in certain age groups are offered a free flu vaccine too.

Eligibility can vary depending on your age, health and circumstances. If you are unsure, contact your GP surgery or local pharmacy, or check the latest guidance on the NHS website.

If you are not eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine, you can usually pay to have one privately at a participating pharmacy. Prices and availability may vary, so it is worth checking with your local provider.

Eligible adults can book their flu vaccination online through the NHS website or NHS App. You may also be able to arrange an appointment through your GP surgery or a participating pharmacy. If you live in a care home, the vaccine may be organised for you, while health and social care workers should check the arrangements available through their employer.

Most eligible adults can receive their flu vaccine from 1 October 2026. Pregnant women and some other eligible groups can receive theirs from 1 September 2026.

You may receive an invitation by text message, letter or through the NHS App. However, you do not always need to wait for an invitation before booking. If you are unsure about your eligibility or how to arrange an appointment, speak to your GP surgery or local pharmacy.
