The Power of Companionship: How Dogs Can Support Older People

This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating the comfort, companionship and joy that our four-legged friends can bring to older people’s lives.

A special kind of companionship

For many people, a dog is much more than a pet- they are a loyal friend and an important part of the family. Their friendly face, wagging tail and unconditional affection can make an enormous difference to someone’s day.

This National Dog Day, we’re exploring some of the ways dogs can support older people, from providing companionship to encouraging gentle activity and social connection.

Comfort, companionship and routine

Life changes such as retirement, bereavement, reduced mobility or living alone can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Having a dog nearby may provide comfort, affection and a reassuring presence throughout the day.

Caring for a dog can also bring routine and purpose. Feeding, grooming and spending time with a pet create meaningful moments and give structure to the day. Although dogs cannot replace human relationships, they can offer a special kind of companionship.

Supporting activity and social connection

Depending on a person’s health and mobility, having a dog may encourage gentle activity. A short walk, playing in the garden or throwing a favourite toy can make movement feel more enjoyable.

Dogs can also help create social connections. Walking a dog may lead to conversations with neighbours and other dog owners, helping older people feel more involved in their community.

Dog ownership will not be suitable for everyone, but spending time with a friend or relative’s dog-or participating in a suitable animal-visiting programme-may provide some of the same enjoyment.
