A Brilliant Day on the Green

Celebrating the Wally Amos Over-60s Open
There are some events that just feel right to be part of—and the Wally Amos Over-60s Open was exactly that.
Held this past Sunday at Newport Bowling Club, it was a full day of sunshine, smiles, and serious bowling. We were delighted to sponsor the event and even more grateful to be welcomed into such a warm and close-knit community. It felt less like a formal competition and more like a gathering of friends, united by their love of the game and their respect for someone truly special: Wally Amos.
Who Was Wally Amos?
Wally wasn’t just a bowler, he was a part of the soul of the club. He bowled well into his 90s and was still on the green long after many might have given it up. That says a lot about the kind of person he was - quietly determined, deeply connected, and full of life.
When we heard about the event being held in his memory, it immediately struck a chord. At Right at Home, we support older adults every day who, like Wally, show that age is no barrier to living fully and with purpose. Sponsoring the event felt like a natural way to honour that spirit.

A Day of Community and Competition
The day itself was fantastic. 32 bowlers took part, each playing five games across seven hours under the July sun. That’s no small feat! There was friendly competition, gentle encouragement from the sidelines, and a lot of good-natured chatter between ends.
In the end, it was Paul Williams from Burway who took home the trophy, after a closely-fought final against Kevin Edwards, one of Newport’s home players. Huge congratulations to both, and to everyone who took part. You made it such a special day.
Why It Mattered to Us
We don’t just provide care, we believe in making a difference every day and supporting people to live well. That means supporting people not only at home, but also out in their communities, doing the things they love.
Events like this remind us why that matters. They bring people together, spark joy, and create moments that stay with us. That’s what Wally stood for. That’s what our care aims to protect - independence, connection, and a sense of belonging.
We're delighted to have supported a day that put staying active in the spotlight, where individuals were celebrated not for what they once did, but for what they are still capable of achieving.

Thank You
A big thank you to Su and the team at Newport Bowling Club for inviting us to be part of such a brilliant event. We were genuinely touched by the warm welcome, the spirit of the players, and the clear respect held for Wally and what he stood for.
We’ll carry those moments with us, just as we know the club will continue to carry his legacy forward.
We’d love to hear from you.
