Things to do in Guiseley, West Yorkshire

Guiseley is a popular suburb in North Leeds, located near Yeadon and Rawdon and not too far from Otley.  We love Guiseley!  From walks around Nunroyd Park to coffee and cake at Morrisons, there is always something to do. Here are some of our favourite activities to do in Guiseley with our Clients:

Care Givers & Clients Love to Visit Nunroyd Park in Guiseley & Yeadon

Nunroyd Park is the perfect place to head for a walk and some gentle exercise.  The newly installed paths, benches and on-site parking make it a good walking route for people with mobility issues.  Nunroyd Park is around 6 acres and contains a pond (stocked with bream, rudd, roach and tench) and beck waterway as well as small, wooded areas.  For those who are able and adventurous there is the Nunroyd fairy and elf door trail with 40 mystical doors to find, the wildflower meadows and the community orchard too – thanks to The Friends of Nunroyd Park.

On a summer’s day there is nothing better than watching a game of cricket outside Green Lane Cricket Club (the former home of AVSED) with a picnic lunch before heading up to the pond to feed the ducks!

Guiseley Well

Guiseley Well is a nice tranquil place to sit and relax and listen to the running clear water.  Believed to have been from Saxon time, it was restored in the year 2000.  In the summer it is nice to watch the youngsters paddling in the cooling water.

Home Care and Trips Out to Guiseley Theatre

More than 155 years old, Guiseley Theatre has been a town hall, cinema, hospital and even a fire station in its time!  As well as fabulous productions, it’s now the residence of Codswollap CIC, a community arts project which is fronted by the lively and memorable, Guiseley born and bred, Jacob Philips.  Jacob is also the front man behind projects and festivals such as Tales Told and The Community Food Table and always supports the Guiseley Carnival and Yeadon Carnival.

Best Places to Eat in Guiseley – Our Favourites!

It’s hard to say who has the bigger sweet-tooth – our Clients or our CareGivers! Needless to say, a favourite pastime is always going for a cuppa and some cake. Some of our favourite haunts include Bramble Bakehouse, Just My Cuppa’, The Office Saloon, The Wetherby Whaler and Corner House Café – it’s so hard to choose!

Swincar Nurseries in Guiseley

Many of our clients are passionate gardeners, and so a trip to Swincar Nurseries on Chevin End Road, is always welcome! We love walking amongst the gorgeous greenery and picking out new bedding plants to help brighten up our Client’s gardens. You can’t help but have a good day if you get a new plant!  For those, less able to attend their garden, we can bring the garden to them and make adaptations so that they can still enjoy their hobbies.

Accompanying Clients to St Oswald’s Church, Guiseley

St Oswald’s Church is a beautiful church steeped in history and located on Church Street, just south of Queensway.  We love to hear the bells ringing here and listen to the talented robed choir.  In the graveyard, there are many interesting tombstones from those who served in the wars, including one of my favourites…. “here lies the remains of a very honest man”.  Both inside and out, this Grade 1 listed church is beautiful.  If you like history, then keep an eye out for a copy of the marriage certificate from 1812, belonging to Patrick Bronte and Marie Branwell (the parents of the Bronte sisters).  You will also find the remains of a 9th century Anglo-Danish cross shaft.

Guiseley Memorial

Guiseley Memorial is at the site of a former market cross.  It commemorates those from Guiseley who served or died in the South African war, WWI and WWII as well as the Falklands War.  It is now a memorial garden, where you will find poppies being laid on Remembrance Sunday or nativity scenes at Christmas.

Social Groups in Guiseley

Guiseley Memories Cafe

If your loved one or someone you know lives with a memory impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s then Guiseley Memories Café at Guiseley Cricket Club is a happy and supportive group.  Volunteering there is one of the highlights of my week.  It takes place on Fridays each week between 1pm and 3pm – but be sure to call John or Alison before arriving as it’s very popular indeed.  This may be down to the outstanding food and entertainment – everyone is made to feel very welcome!

Good Grief Guiseley

Good Grief Guiseley are a community initiative, led by local organisations and residents, including Full Circle Funerals. Once a month, they hold a café at Guiseley Theatre for those who have experienced bereavement.

Guiseley Senior Citizens

Also in Guiseley, once a month at Guiseley Methodist Church, The Guiseley Senior Citizens meet.  We attend this group on a regular basis and I am both a trustee and member of the committee.

The committee organises The Guiseley Carnival and the coffee mornings – the funds from these, enable local senior citizens to attend the highly anticipated yearly summer seaside trip, free of charge!  Read more about our volunteer work in the community and the groups that we attend here.

About Guiseley

The name ‘Guiseley’ comes from the old English and means ‘Gislic’s Clearing’, though quite who Gislic was, appears to be lost in history!

Guiseley is an old settlement town, near Rawdon and Yeadon and on the way to Otley.  Stone age and bronze age artefacts have been found in Guiseley and there is even an old roman road on Guiseley Moor. There was also a Saxon settlement once here, based around Guiseley Wells spring. Once a farming community, it became industrialised in the Victorian era with a multitude of mills.

Many of you will remember or have worked at Brook Crompton on Netherfield Road.  It was a major part of Guiseley's industrial history, but sadly closed in 2004.

Also, in Guiseley on the horizon you will notice the landmark "Elephant Trees", which can be spotted a miles off.

Guiseley is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Harry Ramsden’s fish and chips (now owned by The Wetherby Whaler).  However, another fish and chip shop, Springfield Fisheries, also has it’s own claim to fame, as Harry Corbett, the creator of Sooty and Sweep, used to live there!

Today a lot of the old industry has gone, but Guiseley remains a vibrant town with 2 retail parks as well as a multitude of shops along Leeds Road, including a Morrisons where you always bump into someone you know!  There is also an active sporting community with football - Guiseley AFC, athletics and cricket teams, and a railway station ready to take us on adventures to neighbouring towns!  You can be in Leeds in just 15 minutes and miss out on all the stationary traffic!
