Things to do in Rawdon, North Leeds

We love Rawdon, from walks around Micklefield Park to afternoon tea at The Billing Tea Room, there is always something to do. Here are some of our favourite activities to do in Rawdon with our Clients:

Larkfield Dam and Rawdon Billing

Rawdon Billing is a landmark hill in Aireborough (sometimes referred to as Billing Hill), located above a former mill reservoir called Larkfield Dam.  On a clear day you can see York Minster and of course the aircraft at Leeds Bradford International Airport.  Today the dam is used for model boat enthusiasts.

Home Care in Rawdon and Trips to Micklefield Park with our Clients

We love going for a walk around Micklefield Park and getting our steps in! The (mostly) level paths, plentiful benches and on-site car park make it a good walking route for people with mobility issues. On a summer’s day there is nothing better than getting a 99 (with flake of course!) from the ice-cream van and sitting on a bench watching the squirrels – followed by a stop at the Rawdon library to find some new reading material!

Of course, there is also Micklefield Crown Green Bowls and the impressive Micklefield House.  This is a Gothic-style Grade II Listed Victorian mansion in Micklefield Park. Up until the 1930s it belonged to the first Lord Mayor of Bradford, John Godwin.  It even contained a baronial style ballroom!  Since then, it's been the headquarters of Aireborough Council and then Leeds City Council offices, before being auctioned off in 2022.

Our Homecare Clients in Rawdon are Partial to A Spot of Lunch

You can always find tasty treats in Rawdon, from the vegetarian Brown’s Greens to the traditional at The Billing Tea Room, Town Street.  But make sure you pick up some goodies for home from Croissant d’Or. There is of course the iconic Village Bakery with it's quaint black and white exterior, if you are in a hurry.  You'll often find our CareGiver's in there picking up a little treat on the way to our Clients.

We love going out for lunch with our Clients, it’s a lovely way to have a treat and get out of the house without needing to wait for dry weather!

Rustle and Co in Rawdon...The Best Gift Shop for Miles Around!

Rustle and Co is an all-time favourite of ours and our Clients.  If you live in Yeadon, Guiseley or beyond it is well worth a visit.  Established in 2001, by sisters Deborah and Julia, you can’t help but look at their beautiful window display when queuing at the junction on New Road Side.  We love to pop in not just for our birthday gifts!

About Rawdon, North Leeds

The name ‘Rawdon’ comes from the old English and means ‘red hill’.  While the hill part is easy to see the reason for it being a red hill is lost in time.

Rawdon is an old settlement, with evidence of human activity dating back to the bronze age. It has even been mentioned in the Domesday Book. Rawdon village is believed to have its origins in the manor house now known as Layton Hall. The descendants of the manor residents subsequently constructed their own dwellings in close proximity.  Houses for workers also began to later emerge in the vicinity.

The Cragg Wood area started as an exclusive suburb of villas designed for wealthy textile merchants who traded in nearby Leeds and Bradford. In the 1700s and 1800s Low Mill, Park Mill and Larkfield Mill were built.  The buildings were later known as Larkfield Works before being taken over by Timothy Whites the chemist.  If you were a local residents in the 50s or 60s you may remember the awful strange smell that wafted into your home!

Later in the 60’s Rawdon’s claim to fame was the marriage of Spike Milligan, the comedian to Pat Ridgeway at Cragg Wood Roman Catholic Church.

Today Rawdon retains a lot of it’s village charm, with areas such as Little London boasting beautiful stone terrace cottages and the independent businesses such as the Village Bakery and Maggie’s Tea Room serving up delicious home cooking!  Not forgetting the beautiful St Peter's Church with it's Commonwealth war graves and chiming bells on a summer's day.

The Garden of Remembrance and war memorial at the junction of Over Road and Leeds Road, near Micklefield Road in Rawdon, was constructed in 1926.  It contains the names of 110 men and women who died serving in the two world wars.  It is a peaceful place to come and sit, if you can ignore the noise of the traffic....just be careful of the slippy Yorkshire stone if you do take a little wander down.

How Can Right at Home Leeds in Rawdon Help You or Your Loved One?

We all know that sadly all too often, these days, care provision is provided in a rushed fashion.  Inevitably, we hear from our Clients' families, who have used other services, that corners have been cut, carers have arrived late, left early or that they have simply not been allocated enough time for the "tasks" in hand.

This is where Right at Home differ!

Our ethos is that we do not rush, we treat your loved one's as individuals, ensuring that they feel valued, respected and cared for.  Right at Home Leeds North, Otley and Horsforth have a minimum visit time of 1 hour.  That's 1 hour of care, companionship and support - travel is carried out in our time, not yours - ensuring that you never feel rushed.  Care is carried out at the pace that our Client requires and importantly we have time to get to know our Clients and build their trust.  Of course, we also care 7 days a week, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day too.

We love nothing more, than improving our Clients lives in whatever way possible.  Often this includes taking our Clients out into the community, for afternoon tea, a trip to the theatre, picking out plants for refreshing the hanging baskets or a trip to a North Leeds donkey sanctuary!

You can find out more about our services here, or by giving us a call on 0113 340 6000 and we will be more than happy to discuss your requirements in more detail.
