Supporting People Living with Dementia During Dementia Awareness Week

Recognising the importance of understanding, patience, and person-centred dementia care.

Published: 18/05/2026

During Dementia Awareness Week, we take the opportunity to highlight the importance of compassionate support for those living with dementia and the families around them.

At Right at Home Medway, our care is always centred around the individual. Supporting someone with dementia means understanding their experiences, responding with patience, and creating an environment where they feel safe and valued.

One approach our team follows is the 4 R’s of dementia care - a simple framework that helps guide calm, supportive interactions.

Reassure
A calm voice and gentle reassurance can make all the difference. Simple words such as “You’re safe, I’m here” can help reduce anxiety and provide comfort.

Reconsider
Changes in behaviour are often a way of communicating a need. Taking time to understand a situation from the client’s perspective helps us respond with empathy and care.

Redirect
If something is causing distress, changing the focus can help ease the moment. This may mean moving to a quieter room, starting a familiar conversation, or engaging in an activity they enjoy.

Relax
Maintaining a calm environment and a familiar routine can provide reassurance. Taking things slowly and avoiding unnecessary changes helps create a sense of comfort.

Small actions can make a meaningful difference in dementia care, from keeping routines consistent and speaking clearly, to allowing extra time and ensuring surroundings feel familiar.

"At Right at Home Medway, we see every day how important consistent, compassionate support is for clients living with dementia and the families around them. Dementia Action Week is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness, but also to reflect on the small, meaningful ways we help people continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes."
