Heaton Chapel Local History and Places to Visit

Before the year 1758, Heaton Chapel was not in existence as a separate entity; rather, it was considered a part of the Lancashire parish of Heaton Norris. The need for a chapel had been recognized earlier during the Parliamentary Commission's "Lancashire and Cheshire church surveys" conducted between 1649 and 1655. However, it would be a hundred more years before Mr. A. Colier raised funds through public subscription, and Mr. Sidebotham petitioned the bishop of Chester for permission to establish a place of worship in 1758. This chapel was officially consecrated on October 28, 1758. It is speculated that the demand for the chapel might have been spurred by the preaching of Charles Wesley, who visited Stockport in 1745. The church was constructed on a piece of land known as Yarn Croft, covering an area of 1,712 square yards.
