Car Rental To Care

Published: 23/04/2021

Deciding to start and run a care business when you have spent the previous 19 years in car rental might not seem the most obvious career change. However, whilst the two blue chip businesses that I worked with treated and developed me well, the task or outcome was not particularly rewarding. Owning a care franchise provided an opportunity to run my own business, with support; work in my local community and make a difference to the people in that community. After five years all of the above have been realised.

When researching the requirements to own a Right at Home Franchise it was pretty obvious that carer recruitment was the ‘make or break’ of running a successful care business. The Right at Home Model is based around privately paying Clients, a minimum of a one-hour call time and matching Clients to carers for a perfect fit. Whilst this is more attractive than the standard social care model, the number of people looking for a role in care is simply not enough. Couple this with an ageing population and you soon have a scenario where there is too much demand for the carer supply.

Working for Enterprise Rent a Car taught me the value of growing and nurturing your own talent, in 14 years I progressed from Management Trainee to Regional Director. The opportunities and training were well communicated and encouraged, you were always aware of how and where you could develop.

You could say I am a product of ‘the school’ of car rental, so why not a ‘school of care’?

This became my ‘mantra’ when talking to people in care when I first started;

  • What was available in the industry?
  • What was available in the local Stockport Area?
  • How could we develop a large number of like-minded carers to deliver outstanding care and provide career opportunities?

Apprenticeships were available but they did not seem to create a workforce that had a shared goal and a succession plan to help them map out the future, then we approached Stockport College…
