Christmas is a time for family and loved ones. For those who live alone or need assistance and support, the care at Christmas provided by Right at Home, Stockport and Didsbury brings comfort, security and peace of mind.

It’s That Time Again

Christmas is with us again. Here at Right At Home Stockport & Didsbury, the decorations have gone up, and our very own Elf on the Shelf is amusing our office neighbours!

Christmas is a time for bringing people closer together. It’s that time of year when having our loved ones around us can give comfort and security. This is especially true for those who are in need of care. Christmas can be hard for those who are living with dementia, Alzheimer’s or the elderly who live alone. They can often feel isolated and lonely. Especially when the family has moved away, and neighbours are no longer familiar.

That’s where the support of home carers can make all the difference at Christmas. At Right at Home Stockport and Didsbury, our carers will be working right through Christmas, giving support and comfort to those in need. Providing companionship and friendship, alongside practical care and daily support.

What Care Can We Give This Christmas?

Lots of us try to be with our loved ones at Christmas time. When you can’t be with them, knowing that care professionals are available to deliver support, care and companionship can give great peace of mind. Here are some of the important tasks our professional carers will be delivering this festive season.

Companionship Visiting

A regular visit to someone who is on their own can mean so much. Living alone at Christmas can make people feel very isolated. Companionship caring relieves that isolation. Not only is a carer able to check on a person’s health and wellbeing, making sure they are warm enough and haven’t fallen or hurt themselves, they also bring cheer, smiles, laughter and friendship.

Our carers always spend a minimum of an hour with clients and usually longer. This gives them chance to really provide the care they need. Companionship caring is an important aspect of our work. It might be that the carer simply sits down and chats with the client over a cup of tea, telling stories or listening to memories. Other times, carers will play a game of cards, do a jigsaw or crossword, or listen to music together. It can really make the day for a person living on their own to have a friendly, familiar face drop by.

Help Around the Home

Many elderly people who require care struggle with daily tasks. Carers not only assist clients with their personal requirements, they can also help out around the house too.

At Christmas, it’s important to make the home feel cosy and comfortable. From cleaning up to putting up the Christmas decorations, carers can help turn a person’s home into a lovely environment to be in.

Help out of the Home

Many of our carers help clients with their weekly shop. When it becomes difficult for them to make the trek out to the shops, a carer can help with the all important Christmas shopping.

If your loved ones need help, why not ask them for a shopping list. If they are insistent at shopping themselves, we can give them the support they will need when out and about. Or, to make it even simpler, introduce them to online shopping, and get all the gifts delivered directly to their home.

Christmas Dinner

Christmas dinner is a big event. There’s lots to prepare and quite often lots to clear up afterwards. Our carers don’t stop over Christmas. They will be making visits to clients on Christmas Day itself. Helping clients to make Christmas Dinner and in some cases, feeding them as well.

A friendly face to help with the washing up can make all the difference to a person’s Christmas Day when they live by themselves.

Thank You to Our Caregivers

We’d like to say thank you to our caregivers for all they do over the festive period. Many will be giving up time with their own family in order to help and assist those who need care at Christmas.

Our thanks and gratitude goes out to them all.

Merry Christmas!

David, and the Right at Home Team.
