Bonfire Night: Celebrating Together in the Heart of the Community
Published: 03/11/2025
As the nights draw in and the scent of autumn fills the air, Bonfire Night brings families, friends and neighbours together for one of Britain’s most loved traditions. It’s a time to wrap up warm, enjoy the sparkle of fireworks, and share a moment of togetherness around the glow of a crackling fire.
Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, takes place every 5th November. The tradition began over 400 years ago, marking the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, and has since become a celebration of light, warmth, and community spirit.
Brockham Bonfire – A Surrey Tradition
Here in Mid Surrey, the Brockham Bonfire near Dorking is one of the region’s most famous and beloved events. Each year, thousands gather on Brockham Green to witness a spectacular torchlight procession, the lighting of a huge traditional bonfire, and a breathtaking fireworks display over the Surrey Hills. The atmosphere is truly special — a perfect blend of local pride, community, and celebration.
If you prefer a quieter evening, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy Bonfire Night — from watching fireworks from your window or garden, to making homemade toffee apples or sharing stories of Bonfire Nights past.
