Honouring Remembrance Day: Reflecting, Remembering, and Coming Together

Published: 09/11/2025

Every year, on the 11th of November, communities across the UK pause to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. Remembrance Day is a time for quiet reflection, gratitude, and togetherness — an opportunity to honour not only those who gave their lives in past conflicts but also the veterans, service members, and families who continue to carry their legacy.

The Meaning of Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day marks the end of the First World War, when the guns fell silent at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Today, over a century later, we continue to observe the two minutes of silence to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of all those who have served.

While the day itself is solemn, it is also filled with hope and unity — a reminder of how our communities come together to remember and support one another.

How to Commemorate Remembrance Day

There are many ways to pay your respects on Remembrance Day, whether at home, in your local community, or quietly in your own thoughts. Some meaningful ways to take part include:

  • Observing the two-minute silence at 11 a.m. on the 11th of November.
  • Wearing a red poppy, the symbol of remembrance and hope.
  • Attending a local service or parade to show support for our Armed Forces and veterans.
  • Sharing memories or stories with loved ones who have personal connections to military service.

Local Services in Surrey

If you’re in the Surrey area, a particularly moving event takes place at the Dorking War Memorial in the town centre on Remembrance Sunday. Each year, local residents, veterans, cadets, and community groups gather for a respectful service and wreath-laying ceremony, followed by the traditional two minutes of silence. The Dorking community is known for its heartfelt turnout, and the ceremony beautifully captures the spirit of remembrance and unity.
