Understanding Parkinson's

Over the past few months, our team has had the privilege of working alongside Parkinson's UK to help raise awareness of Parkinson's, support those living with the condition, and champion the incredible work being carried out within local communities.

As Carers, we understand that Parkinson's affects far more than just physical health. It impacts everyday life, relationships, confidence and emotional wellbeing—not only for the person diagnosed, but also for their family, friends and carers.

One of the most rewarding parts of this partnership has been attending local Parkinson's UK community groups. Walking into these sessions, you are immediately struck by the warmth, kindness and openness that fills the room. People share their experiences honestly, celebrate each other's successes, and offer support during more challenging times. There is a real sense of understanding that can only come from being surrounded by people who truly understand what life with Parkinson's is like.

We've also had the opportunity to hear from family members. Their stories have been both inspiring and humbling. Caring for a loved one with Parkinson's can be physically and emotionally demanding, and many Carers quietly carry a great deal of responsibility. Listening to their experiences has reinforced just how important it is that Carers have access to support, guidance and opportunities to connect with others who understand the challenges they face.

The Value of Community Support

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition that affects the brain and the body's ability to control movement. While tremor is often the symptom people associate most with Parkinson's, the condition can present very differently from one person to another.

Some of the most common symptoms include tremor or shaking, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, balance problems, changes to walking and posture, fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety or low mood, changes in speech or swallowing, and, for some people, difficulties with memory or concentration. Because symptoms vary so much, every person's experience of Parkinson's is unique, which is why personalised care and ongoing support are so important.

One thing has become incredibly clear during our time with Parkinson's UK: nobody should have to face Parkinson's alone.

Support groups provide far more than information. They offer friendship, reassurance and a safe space where people can openly discuss the realities of living with Parkinson's. Members are able to share practical advice, learn from healthcare professionals and guest speakers, discover new ways to manage symptoms, and take part in activities that promote both physical and emotional wellbeing.

These groups are equally valuable for partners, family members and carers. They provide an opportunity to speak honestly about the challenges of caring for a loved one, exchange experiences with others in similar situations, and find reassurance that support is available.

Seeing these groups in action has been a genuine privilege. The conversations, encouragement and laughter we have witnessed demonstrate the positive impact that community can have on people's lives. They remind us that, although Parkinson's presents many challenges, connection and understanding can make an enormous difference.

“One of the highlights of my job is being able to attend incredible groups like this. To open my eyes and increase my knowledge of the triumphs and difficulties faced when fighting a might foe like Parkinson's! The support throughout the group is a credit to Arthur and the team at Parkinson's UK SKE. I will see you next month!
