Recognising and Responding to Changes in Health

Published: 13/03/2026

About our Client: Meet John

John* is a valued client who receives daily support from our experienced carers. Over time, our team has gained a thorough understanding of his usual health and routines, allowing us to recognise even small changes in his condition. Our support includes personal care, continence care, medication assistance, mobility support and other daily living needs all tailored to John’s individual requirements.

Recognising and Responding to Changes in Health

During a routine care call in March 2026, John’s carer noticed he appeared more breathless than usual. Because of the strong relationship and knowledge of his normal health patterns, the carer quickly recognised this change.

The office was contacted immediately and the Whzan Blue Box monitoring system was brought to the visit to check John’s vital signs. The readings showed his blood oxygen levels were lower than expected.

The Blue Box records key vital signs and automatically converts them into a NEWS2 score, a nationally recognised system used across the NHS to detect early signs of health deterioration. Based on John’s NEWS2 score, we promptly escalated the situation to the District Nurses, providing accurate and detailed information to support timely decision-making. Paramedics and the Out-of-Hours GP were then contacted. Paramedics administered oxygen, and the GP diagnosed an infection and prescribed antibiotics immediately.

This proactive approach ensured that John received prompt treatment before his condition worsened, helping to prevent a potential hospital admission.

"I can’t thank the team enough for their care and attention. During a recent visit, the carer noticed he was more breathless than usual and immediately acted on it. She arranged to check his vital signs and quickly identified that his oxygen levels were low. Everything moved very quickly – the right professionals were contacted, paramedics arrived with oxygen, and the GP started antibiotics straight away. It was such a relief to see how quickly the team responded. Knowing the carers understand what is ‘normal’ for my husband and act straight away if something changes gives me huge peace of mind. We are incredibly grateful for the enhanced support they provide."
