Steady and Strong: Staying Active and Safe at Home

Published: 12/11/2025

Practical tips for staying active and preventing falls at home

Falls are common among older people, but they are not an inevitable part of ageing. With a few simple, positive steps, it’s possible to reduce the risk of falls and continue living confidently and safely at home.

Below are some practical ways to help you stay steady and strong:

Stay active and build strength

Keeping gently active helps maintain strength, balance, coordination and confidence - all of which play an important role in preventing falls.

Activities such as walking, seated exercises, stretching or light chores around the house can make a real difference. Even small amounts of regular movement can help you feel steadier on your feet.

Keep your home well lit and clutter-free

Good lighting and clear walkways can significantly reduce trip hazards.

Make sure hallways, stairs and entrances are well lit, especially during the darker months. Remove loose rugs, trailing wires and clutter from walkways, and use non-slip mats in the bathroom and kitchen where floors may become wet.

Take care of your feet

Footwear plays a key role in stability. Avoid walking around in socks or loose slippers, and choose shoes that fit well and have non-slip soles.

Looking after your feet - such as trimming toenails regularly and addressing any pain or discomfort - can also help. If you have concerns, a GP or chiropodist can offer advice and support.

Review your health and medication

Some medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness or affect balance. If you have any concerns, speak with your GP or pharmacist.

Regular eye and hearing checks are also important, as changes in vision or hearing can affect awareness of your surroundings and increase the risk of falls.

Plan ahead for safety

Simple changes around the home can make everyday tasks safer. Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid stretching or climbing, and consider installing grab rails in the bathroom or along stairs.

It’s also a good idea to keep a phone or pendant alarm close by, so help is always within reach if you need it.

If you do have a fall

Always tell your GP or another healthcare professional if you experience a fall, even if you don’t feel hurt. A fall can sometimes be a sign of a new or changing health condition, and early advice can help prevent future falls.
