A Safety Guide on Artificial Intelligence
Published: 14/08/2025
AI or Artificial Intelligence, (we know sounds techy!) put simply, is a tool designed to help make life easier through complex computer systems. It is something that has grown significantly over the past few years and is constantly developing, even as you read this!
Like all things new, most of us are weary, which is reasonable as there are downsides and things you need to be cautious of, but there are also many positives that can really make a significant difference within all of our lives! We created this blog as a guide to AI, exploring how to use it, but most importantly how to use it safely.
What is AI and where do you see it?
AI is a tool that uses complex computer systems that would usually require human intelligence, and it is quite common in the world we live in. Putting it simply, it is a technology that can learn and make decisions, imagine it like a personal assistant!
Likelihood is you have already come across it within your home, for instance if you ask Alexa, Siri or Google a question, this is using AI, or perhaps you have a smart doorbell or security camera, once again, AI. Even health gadgets like smart watches that track your vitals, you guessed it, AI!
There is also a vast growth in chat bots online, which appear on many verified web pages. These chat bots are not real people, they are artificial intelligence, however, they are securely made and have all the information you will need and if not they will point you to the next best point of contact – remember how we said earlier that AI acts as an assistant, this is a perfect example of this. All this being said, it’s best to check if the website you are visiting is secure before using the chat bots, just to be cautious.
In many ways AI is quietly making day to day life easier, safer and overall, more connected. But safety can become a worry and knowing how to use AI safely can help prevent any chance of scams, fraud or other online safety violations.
Why safety matters
While AI can be a wonderful tool, it’s important to understand the risks so you can stay safe.
Unfortunately, some people use new technology to trick others, and older adults are often targeted. For example, criminals have begun using AI “voice cloning” to copy the voice of a loved one, such as a grandchild, and then phone asking for urgent money.
Others may use AI chatbots to pretend to be a real person online, gaining trust before asking for personal details. Even well-meaning AI tools can sometimes give incorrect information, which could be confusing or even harmful if relied on for health advice. Many older adults also worry about privacy, where their information is stored, and who can see it. By being aware of these challenges, you and your family can enjoy the benefits of AI while protecting yourselves against potential risks.
How do we stay safe?
Staying safe with AI doesn’t need to be complicated. A few simple habits can make a big difference:
- Be cautious with phone calls. If you get a call that sounds like a loved one asking for money or urgent help, pause and check. Call them back on their usual number to make sure it’s really them.
- Think before you share. Never give out bank details, passwords, or personal information to a chatbot, website, or caller you don’t fully trust.
- Check the source. If AI gives you information that seems odd—especially about health—double-check with a doctor, pharmacist, or a trusted website.
- Use strong passwords. Make sure smart devices like doorbells, cameras, and tablets are protected with secure, unique passwords.
- Ask for help. If you’re unsure about a message, device, or app, talk it through with a family member, friend, or carer before making any decisions.
