High Temperatures

As temperatures continue to climb into the 30s this week, it's important to remember how to keep ourselves and our Clients cool and comfortable.

At Right at Home Bridgend & Vale of Glamorgan, we’re prioritising our Clients' safety by keeping these tips in mind.

Our Tips

Staying Hydrated

Dehydration can happen quickly, especially in the heat. Our CareGivers gently encourage Clients to take regular sips of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Thirst is a late indicator of the body’s need for hydration, and by the time we’re feeling thirsty, we could already be experiencing mild dehydration, shown through symptoms such as fatigue and headaches.

We’re also adding hydrating foods like fruits (such as watermelon and strawberries) and light soups to mealtimes where possible. Families can support this at home by keeping water within easy reach and offering drinks regularly.

We’re especially mindful of clients receiving dementia care at home in the Vale of Glamorgan, as they may be less aware of temperature changes or their hydration needs.

Keeping Cool Indoors

We’re making sure clients’ homes stay as cool as possible - closing blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day, using fans when needed, and encouraging clients to sit in shaded, well‑ventilated areas. A cool flannel or mist spray can also provide soothing relief on warmer days.

Dressing for the Weather

Lightweight, loose‑fitting clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, along with light colours, can make a big difference to comfort. We assist clients in choosing weather‑appropriate outfits and encourage wearing hats and sunglasses when outdoors.

Safe Outdoor Time

Being in nature is great for wellbeing, but we’re mindful about timing outdoor activities to avoid peak sun hours (usually between 11am and 3pm). When outdoors, we help apply sunscreen, ensure hats are worn, and encourage plenty of water breaks.

Checking In Regularly

We know that warmer weather can make people feel more tired or unwell. We’re checking in with clients frequently, encouraging rest, and adjusting care plans if needed to prioritise comfort and safety. For those who need continuous support, our live‑in care and overnight care in Bridgend ensures someone is always on hand to monitor wellbeing during hot weather.

Our team keeps an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, such as dizziness, headache, confusion, excessive sweating, or clammy skin. If we notice anything concerning, we act swiftly and seek medical advice as needed.

A Team Effort

Supporting our clients through a heatwave is a team effort, and we encourage families, friends, and neighbours to stay connected and check in on their loved ones. If you’re concerned about someone’s wellbeing in the heat, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us for advice or support.

Together, we can ensure everyone enjoys the sun safely and comfortably.
