Meet Michelle

Role at Right at Home – Senior Caregiver for Right at Home Alton & Bordon.

When did you join? – October 2021.

How would you describe your role? – I look after clients and their families and carry out reviews of care packages. I’m the first point of contact for any questions that clients or their families might have about their care.

I also work as a caregiver which includes providing personal care, companionship, and support to clients.

What did you before you joined Right at Home? – Before coming to Alton & Bordon I worked for Right at Home Portsmouth, but I decided to move to be closer to my son’s school. He is disabled and attends Treloars in Alton.

Before I became a part of the Right at Home family, I worked as a support worker at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. I’ve been in care for 16/17 years – I’m always doing care!

What training have you undertaken at Right at Home Alton & Bordon – When I joined, I did the mandatory induction training which is very comprehensive. I’ve since done my field supervision training so I can do gold standard appraisals.

What do you enjoy most about your job? – I like going out and meeting clients and their families. I love to get to know the clients and hear about their upbringing and the stories from those who lived through the war. I also enjoy learning about social history and hearing from clients about how different everything is today.

What has been the highlight of working at Right at Home Alton & Bordon? – So far, the highlight has been being promoted to Senior Carer in January. With my personal life, this was a big step for me, but I love my clients and everything about the role.

What advice would you give to somebody thinking about going into care? – I would say give it at least 2-4 weeks before you decide if it is for you. Every day is different, and every client is different, so you have to give it time.

I know that some people feel scared about the personal care side of the job, but this is a very small part of what we do. Getting to know the people and getting them to trust you is very rewarding.

Good caregivers are in demand, why do you recommend Right at Home? – I’ve found everybody to be very supportive. It is OK to ask for help and I don’t feel judged.

The hourly rate of pay is good, and we are given sufficient travel time to get from one client to another. Right at Home Alton & Bordon, the Guildford and Farnham and Twickenham and Richmond offices are well run, and everyone is there to support each other. Everything is done as a team, and I like that approach.
